Overview

This standard is about selecting and using hand held tools and equipment in the Tram and Tramway environment. You must be able to select the correct hand held tool or equipment for the task and carry out a range of safety checks to confirm that the hand held tools and equipment are fit for the purpose intended.  You will be able to use hand held tools and equipment safely and in line with organisational procedures.  This includes wearing the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and confirming a safe system of work has been set up prior to undertaking any activities.  You will know and understand your organisations procedures for the use of hand held tools and equipment and the methods for reporting any issues relating to the hand held tools and equipment. This standard is for those who work in the engineering or construction Tram and Tramway environment.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

P1        set up a safe system of work to minimise the risks associated with using hand held tools and equipment in the Tram and Tramway environment

P2        confirm you are wearing the correct PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and following the relevant health and safety procedures

P3        access the relevant documentation relating to the hand held tools and equipment to be used, where relevant

P4        select the hand tools and equipment required to complete the work activity

P5        set up supporting equipment relevant to the activity being carried out

P6        carry out inspection and preparation activities on the hand held tools and equipment

P7        use hand tools and equipment in line with organisational procedures

P8        take action to minimise the risks associated with the use of hand held tools and equipment in the Tram and Tramway environment

P9        take action when issues arise with the hand tools and equipment in line with organisational procedures

P10    clean and store hand tools and equipment after use in line with organisational procedures

P11    dispose of waste items in line with organisational procedures and relevant legislation

P1        **Safe system of work** may include; barriers, tape, warning signs and tape, temporary cable tidy/protector, additional lighting, exclusion zones (including the protection of people, flammable substance etc.), machine guards. P2        **Health and safety** **procedures** ****may include; ergonomic working, moving and manual handling, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), working time and breaks, lone working, Personal Track Safety, safe systems of work (authorised access/egress points, signage, lighting, CCTV, walking to and from a work site, planned protection arrangements, emergency stop protection arrangements, possession arrangements, isolation requirements, communication/warning arrangements and techniques, positions of safety, safety zones, lookout arrangements, first aid points, emergency assembly point, safety briefings,  fire evacuation, working at height requirements, working in confined spaces requirements, authorised walking routes, emergency service support (as required), walking to and from a vehicle, designated parking areas). P3        **Documentation** may include; risk assessment, calibration certificate, instructions, specifications, PAT certificate, noise, dust and vibration control, manufacturer's instructions/manuals, maintenance requests/reports. P5        **Supporting equipment** may include**;** access (ladders, steps, trestles, platforms, hoists), lifting and handling equipment, safety (harness, PPE), isolation (tape, barriers), temporary electrical supplies (lighting, sockets). P6        **Inspection and preparation** may include; tests, checks, calibration, cleaning, turning on, lubricating, adjusting, wear and tear, removing and replacing consumable components, tightening, sharpening. P8**       ** **Risks** may include; hand/arm vibration, personal injuries, injuries to others, strains, damage to assets, equipment and component.
