Overview

This standard is about providing technical advice and support to professional users of Tram vehicles following a breakdown or failure where specialist technical assistance is required.  It includes being able to source information with regard to the support required and providing detailed information and instruction either remotely or on site.   The level and detail of the technical advice may vary but will be in accordance with approved specifications, documents and manuals.  You will need to know and understand the different questioning techniques used to ensure all the information regarding the breakdown or failure is gathered.  Being able to identify and report patterns and trends in breakdowns and failures is an important aspect of this standard.

This standard is for those who work as an engineering technician or supervisor in the Tram and Tramway environment.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

P1        confirm you are wearing the correct PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and following the relevant health and safety procedures

P2        establish the circumstances of the breakdown or failure

P3        identify the relevant technical advice and support required by professional users of Tram vehicles

P4        source and analyse relevant information relating to the breakdown or failure

P5        ask questions to gain further information regarding the breakdown or failure

P6        provide technical advice and support using methods and procedures approved by your organisation

P7        confirm that the technical advice and support has been understood by the professional user

P8        initiate follow up activities, as required

P9        review the technical advice and support given to identify potential patterns and trends in breakdowns and failures

P10    report suspected patterns and trends in line with organisational procedures

P11    report and record technical advice and support activities in line with organisational procedures

P1        **Health and safety** **procedures** ****may include; ergonomic working, moving and manual handling, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), working time and breaks, lone working, Personal Track Safety, safe systems of work (authorised access/egress points, signage, lighting, CCTV, walking to and from a work site, planned protection arrangements, emergency stop protection arrangements, possession arrangements, isolation requirements, communication/warning arrangements and techniques, positions of safety, safety zones, lookout arrangements, first aid points, emergency assembly point, safety briefings,  fire evacuation, working at height requirements, working in confined spaces requirements, authorised walking routes, emergency service support (as required), walking to and from a vehicle, designated parking areas). P4        **Relevant information** may include; specifications, diagnostic, contractual, performance, witness accounts, manuals, work logs, maintenance history. P7        **Professional user** may include; Tram driver, Tram vehicle recovery team, other members of the organisation. P8        **Follow up activities** may include; further communication, replacement of a vehicle, recovery of a vehicle, communication with other departments, testing, maintenance, fault finding.
