Monitor and assess safe systems of work in the Tram and Tramway environment
Overview
This standard identifies the competencies you will need to monitor and assess safe systems of work in the Tram and Tramway environment. It is about making sure that there are systems in place to ensure the separation of workers, and also the general public, from moving Tram vehicles, Tram vehicle components, infrastructure assets, equipment and components are monitored and assessed before, during and after engineering activities. You will be able to review the effectiveness of safe systems of work and suggest improvements where necessary.
This standard is for those who work in the Tram and Tramway environment at supervisor/technician level and above.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
P1 confirm you are wearing the correct PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and following the relevant safe systems of work
P2 source and interpret the relevant information and documentation relating to the work area and its safe system of work requirements
P3 perform a visual assessment to establish the safety condition of the Tram and Tramway environment
P4 conduct a work activity risk assessment, where required
P5 monitor and assess the safe systems of work at regular intervals before, during and after work activities
P6 identify when safe systems of work could be improved
P7 suggest changes to safe systems of work in line with organisational requirements
P8 report any issues regarding safe systems of work to the relevant person(s) in line with organisational requirements

K1 the relevant legal and organisational procedures relating to health and safety at work
K2 the importance of conducting a visual assessment to establish the safety condition of the Tram and Tramway environment
K3 how and when risk assessments are conducted in the Tram and Tramway environment
K4 the ways in which a risk assessment can inform safe systems of work
K5 the employer and employee responsibilities in relation to safe systems of work in the Tram and Tramway environment
K6 the relevant control measures and how these inform a safe system of work
K7 the methods and techniques for monitoring and assessing a safe system of work
K8 when safe systems of work require to be reviewed and monitored
K9 the range of controls and procedures in place to prevent interference with a safe system of work
K10 the potential impact of a safe system of work failure
K11 the relevant organisational procedures for reporting issues and unsafe working practices

P2 **I****nformation and documentation** may include; work permits, risk assessments, site diagrams and schematics, work specifications.** ** **Safe system of work** may include; authorised access/egress points, signage, lighting, CCTV, walking to and from a work site, planned protection arrangements, emergency stop protection arrangements, possession arrangements, isolation requirements, communication/warning arrangements and techniques, positions of safety, safety zones, lookout arrangements, first aid points, emergency assembly point, safety briefings, fire evacuation, working at height requirements, working in confined spaces requirements, authorised walking routes, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements, emergency service support (as required), walking to and from a vehicle, designated parking areas. |

K6 Control measures may include those relating to; the type of activity, the location and its access/egress requirements, equipment and plant, materials and components, substances used and produced (dust, fumes, chemicals), personnel (those performing the activities and lines of reporting), sequence of operations, avoidance of obstruction (fire exits, access points), emergency procedures, pedestrian/highways interface.

Includes the tramway (a set of rails, switches and crossings which form the route of a Tram) , infrastructure (fixed assets used for the running of the Tram transport system, including, the tramway, bridges, tunnels, stops, stations and fixed equipment for signalling, communications and electrification), depots, stabling yards.
