Tumble-dry textile items
Overview
This standard is for those who prepare machinery and items to tumble-dry or condition textile items. You may also organise the work and control the tumble drying process. This standard is for textile care services laundry operatives.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
P1 prepare machinery and items for tumble drying
P2 remove any items from the loads not suitable for tumble-drying and select alternative drying methods
P3 operate the tumble drying machinery correctly
P4 safely load and unload dried items in line with organisational procedures
P5 deal with items that are not satisfactorily dried or damaged
P6 identify faults and malfunctions with machinery and report these as required
P7 identify any problems that may arise with the dried items and report these as required
P8 pass items to the next process following tumble drying, checking items are sufficiently cooled and safe to pack
P9 carry out the drying work as instructed, informing the supervisor if this isn’t possible
P10 carry out routine maintenance to machinery in line with organisational procedures
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
K1 how the tumble-drying process works
K2 the correct drying programmes to use and how to select them
K3 the importance of following care labels correctly
K4 the different drying conditions according to fibres, fabrics and textile finishes
K5 the specific hazards associated with the tumble-drying process including spontaneous combustion
K6 how to make the best use of the resources available
K7 how to carry out routine maintenance as per company in line with organisational procedures
K8 how to recognise faults and malfunctions with machinery and the actions to take
K9 statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislations and regulations during the tumble-drying process
