Overview

​This standard is for those who launder textile items, maintain operating standards, equipment and supplies, while organising and controlling the washing process using a washer extractor.

This standard is for laundry operatives.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. prepare the washer extractor ready for use
  2. plan and allocate the washing of the loads
  3. operate the machinery in accordance with manufacturers procedures and instructions
  4. safely use detergents, chemicals and additives during the washing process
  5. safely load and unload machines between washing processes
  6. handle items with care and in line with organisational procedures
  7. check that work is being carried out as planned
  8. identify and report any machine faults in line with organisational procedures
  9. remove any items that are not washed satisfactorily, or have been damaged and deal with these according to organisational procedures
  10. identify and report any problems that arise in carrying out the washing process
  11. transfer the cleaned load to the next stage of the laundry process

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how the complete washing process works
  2. the operational settings and range of performance from machinery
  3. how to interpret care labels and why these must be followed
  4. the different fibres, fabrics and textile finishes and how to process these
  5. the correct load weight for the machine and the fabric
  6. the difference between wash programmes and how to select these
  7. the different temperature settings for the wash programmes
  8. the problems associated with high and low dip levels
  9. how to recognise faults and malfunctions within the machine or wash process and the action to take
  10. how to identify faults or deficiencies in washed work in line with organisational quality standards
  11. who to report faults with machinery to and when this should be done
  12. who to report faults in the washed items to and when this should be done
  13. how to stop a malfunctioning washing machine safely
  14. how to carry out routine machine maintenance in line with organisational procedures
  15. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations during the washing process
