Overview
This standard is for those who launder textile items, maintain operating standards, equipment and supplies, while organising and controlling the washing process using a washer extractor.
This standard is for laundry operatives.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
P1 prepare the washer extractor ready for use
P2 plan and allocate the washing of the loads
P3 operate the machinery in accordance with manufacturers procedures and instructions
P4 safely use detergents, chemicals and additives during the washing process
P5 safely load and unload machines between washing processes
P6 handle items with care and in line with organisational procedures
P7 check that work is being carried out as planned
P8 identify and report any machine faults in line with organisational procedures
P9 remove any items that are not washed satisfactorily, or have been damaged and deal with these according to organisational procedures
P10 identify and report any problems that arise in carrying out the washing process
P11 transfer the cleaned load to the next stage of the laundry process
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
K1 how the complete washing process works
K2 the operational settings and range of performance from machinery
K3 how to interpret care labels and why these must be followed
K4 the different fibres, fabrics and textile finishes and how to process these
K5 the correct load weight for the machine and the fabric
K6 the difference between wash programmes and how to select these
K7 the different temperature settings for the wash programmes
K8 the problems associated with high and low dip levels
K9 how to recognise faults and malfunctions within the machine or wash process and the action to take
K10 how to identify faults or deficiencies in washed work in line with organisational quality standards
K11 who to report faults with machinery to and when this should be done
K12 who to report faults in the washed items to and when this should be done
K13 how to stop a malfunctioning washing machine safely
K14 how to carry out routine machine maintenance in line with organisational procedures
K15 statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations during the washing process
