Overview
This standard is for those who dry and finish textile items following the wet cleaning process. You will be responsible for inspecting finished items to check these meet organisational quality standards and rectifying any issues with the items.
This standard is for wet cleaning operatives.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
P1 select the correct drying or finishing equipment to be used for the textile item
P2 check that the drying or finishing equipment is safe and ready to use
P3 check that textile items are suitable for drying or finishing and redirect if unsuitable
P4 adjust the machinery to suit the item you are to process
P5 process the textile item using the drying or finishing equipment
P6 correct distortions or stretching and restore shape to items during finishing
P7 ensure finishing of sensitive fibres and textiles is in line with care labels
P8 inspect the textile item following finishing to ensure it meets the organisation’s finishing requirements
P9 identify textile items that do not meet organisational finishing requirements and deal with these
P10 identify any problems that may arise during the finishing process and report these
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
K1 advantages and disadvantages of different types of drying and/or finishing equipment
K2 what the specific hazards are with drying and/or finishing textile items
K3 the correct steam pressures, vacuum services and lighting requirements
K4 how to use the finishing equipment/pressbuck clothing requirements and ancillary tools
K5 the iron temperature adjustments and ironing/steaming techniques relative to different fabrics
K6 how to interpret care labels
K7 how the tumble drying process works
K8 specific hazards of the tumble drying process
K9 the value of vacuum in finishing
K10 how to check and adjust the press locking pressure
K11 how different fibres, fabrics and item construction can affect the drying or finishing process
K12 how to care for buttons, trim, accessories and fastenings
K13 how to apply additional finishes where appropriate
K14 statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
