Overview


This standard is for those who sort, classify and clean textile items using wet cleaning processes. You will be responsible for preparing, operating and maintaining wet cleaning equipment, handling solvents, detergents and other chemicals safely.
This standard is for wet cleaning operatives.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

P1    prepare the items and wet cleaning machinery for use
P2    plan, allocate and classify the loads for wet cleaning
P3    remove any items from the loads not suitable for wet cleaning and select alternative cleaning methods
P4    operate the wet cleaning machine safely in line with the manufacturer’s instructions
P5   monitor equipment settings, dosing and levels of detergents, chemicals and solvents during the wet cleaning process
P6   store chemicals and solvents in line with organisational procedures and COSSH requirements
P7    handle items with care and in line with organisational procedures
P8    inspect items prior to finishing to ensure they meet organisational quality standards
P9    identify and report any problems that may arise in carrying out the work
P10  identify and deal with items that are not cleaned satisfactorily or have been damaged during the cleaning process
P11  maintain the wet cleaning equipment in line with organisational procedures


Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:


K1 how to select and safely use solvents, detergents and chemicals for wet cleaning
K2 the different wash cycles of the wet cleaning machinery 
K3 the operating temperatures, water levels and mechanical action of the wet clean machinery
K4 how to interpret care labels
K5 the different fibres, fabrics and types of trimmings and accessories on items for cleaning
K6 which textile items are suitable for wet cleaning and which wet cleaning processes may be required
K7 how to inspect items following wet cleaning in line with organisational quality standards
K8 how to identify common problems with items following wet cleaning
K9 who to report faults with the wet cleaning equipment to
K10  statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations during the wet cleaning process including COSSH
