This standard is about providing supporting operations for textile production.

This includes preparing and organising work, carrying out manual operations, distributing work and isolating imperfect products.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. keep the work area clean and safe at all times
  2. organise the work area to to meet production requirements
  3. check that equipment and tools are in good working order and ready for use
  4. protect products from contamination and damage at all times
  5. identify products to be processed from work instructions
  6. carry out manual operations in accordance with work instructions and agreed procedures
  7. use approved work methods to process products
  8. check processed products meet specification
  9. minimise work interruptions and downtime to maintain production timelines
  10. work in ways that minimise wastage at all times
  11. handle products with care in in line with agreed procedures
  12. forward products to the next stage in the production process in line with agreed procedures
  13. identify and isolate imperfect products in line with agreed procedures
  14. report any faults to the appropriate person in line with agreed procedures
  15. complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with agreed procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the support services required for particular products
  2. how to receive, interpret and follow work instructions, making use of the information supplied
  3. how to identify products which do not conform to specification
  4. how to report faults to the appropriate people
  5. how to forward products and ensure their safe handover
  6. how to interpret and follow work instructions
  7. the checks needed to ensure product quality and quantity
  8. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  9. the type of materials to be used and the quantities needed
  10. how to report problems with products, materials or equipment
  11. how to protect products from damage and contamination during operations
  12. how to forward processed products safely to next location
  13. the importance of achieving quality and its relation to the end user or customer
  14. how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility
  15. how to resolve problems within the work area
  16. the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and  reporting procedures 
  17. the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
  18. own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
  19. the types of records kept, how they are completed and the importance of accuracy
  20. the importance of complying with written instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions 
  21. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
