Overview

This standard is about packing manufactured products for storage or despatch.  This can apply to the manufacture of products made from textiles or sewn products.

This includes preparing to pack finished products, carrying out packing operations, ensuring the correct packaging is used, checking that packaged goods meet specification and forwarding packed goods.

This standard is for those who pack products
before they are stored and despatched.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. keep the work area clean and safe at all times
  2. organise the work area to meet production needs
  3. follow work instructions for specified products at all times
  4. check that equipment and tools are in good working order and are ready for use
  5. select and check products to be packed against specification
  6. identify and select specified packaging for products
  7. pack and label products according to packaging instructions
  8. protect products from dirt, damage and contamination during and after packing
  9. minimise work interruptions and downtime to maintain specified timelines
  10. work in ways that minimise wastage at all times
  11. handle products and packaging with care in accordance with agreed procedures
  12. check packaged products meets specification
  13. identify and isolate imperfect products and packaging in accordance with agreed procedures
  14. report any faults to the responsible person
  15. complete and store accurate records and documentation in accordance with agreed procedures
  16. forward packaged goods to specified locations

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to receive, interpret and follow work instructions, making use of the information supplied
  2. the checks needed to ensure the product for packaging is correct for quality and quantity
  3. the type of packaging materials to be used and the quantities needed
  4. how to report problems with products, packaging materials or equipment
  5. how to protect products from damage and contamination during packaging
  6. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  7. how to report packaged products which do not conform to specification and to whom
  8. how to forward packaged products safely to next location
  9. the importance of achieving quality and its relation to the end user or customer
  10. how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility
  11. how to resolve problems within the work area
  12. the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures 
  13. the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
  14. the types of records kept, how they are completed and the importance of accuracy
  15. the importance of complying with written instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions
  16. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
