Overview

This standard is about monitoring quality during production.

This includes interpreting specifications and work instructions, planning work to ensure continuity of production and examining and passing finished textile products against specification.

This standard is for those who monitor product quality during production and examine and pass products using the organisation’s quality control procedures.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. interpret and work in line with work instructions and specifications at all times
  2. keep the work area clean and safe at all times
  3. organise the work area to meet production requirements
  4. check that equipment and tools are in good working order and ready for use
  5. protect materials and products from contamination at all times
  6. examine products following approved procedures and examination techniques
  7. handle all products with care in accordance with agreed procedures
  8. identify faults and report them in accordance with agreed procedures
  9. report problems outside of your own limits of responsibility to relevant people
  10. identify repairable faulty products in accordance with agreed procedures
  11. take corrective action to return products to required standards in accordance with agreed procedures
  12. isolate products which do not meet specifications or are not repairable in accordance with agreed procedures
  13. minimise work interruptions and downtime to maintain specified timelines
  14. work in ways that minimise wastage at all times
  15. use approved methods to mark and log identified faults
  16. record problems in line with organisational guidelines
  17. forward rejected products which have not passed inspection in accordance with agreed procedures
  18. report accurate results of inspections to the appropriate person without delay
  19. forward passed products to the next stage in the production process in accordance with agreed procedures
  20. complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with organisational requirements

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to receive, interpret and follow work instructions, making use of the information supplied
  2. how to check products against specification
  3. the inspection processes required for particular products
  4. how effective planning of work activities maintains continuity of operations
  5. the characteristics of materials to be inspected
  6. the reasons why products do not conform
  7. the procedures to follow when products do not meet specification
  8. how to identify which faulty products are repairable or unrepairable
  9. the importance of keeping the work area clean and free from obstructions 
  10. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  11. pre-inspection activities
  12. approved methods of inspection
  13. the types of faults and irregularities in products
  14. the methods of protecting materials and finished goods
  15. the methods for identifying, segregating and correctly marking faults
  16. how to deal with rejected products
  17. the importance of achieving quality and its relation to the end user or customer
  18. how to resolve problems within the work area
  19. how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility
  20. the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures 
  21. the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
  22. own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
  23. the types of records kept, how they are completed and the importance of accuracy
  24. the importance of complying with written instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions
  25. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
