Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. receive, interpret and follow instructions for moving materials
  2. collect and sort materials ready for distribution within agreed timescales
  3. check materials meet requirements, match specifications and are labelled in line with organisational procedures
  4. allocate specified quantities of materials to specified locations
  5. identify and select moving equipment that is safe and ready for use
  6. check that materials to be moved are secure and loaded correct way for the moving equipment being used
  7. deliver materials to required locations following approved operating procedures
  8. keep materials and components secure and protected at all times
  9. use correct handling and moving techniques
  10. minimise work interruptions and downtime to maintain specified timelines
  11. work in ways that minimise wastage at all times
  12. identify problems and take corrective action within the limits of your own responsibility
  13. store materials in agreed locations following approved operating procedures
  14. return equipment in a safe condition to its correct location and in accordance with approved operating procedures
  15. identify, isolate and report damaged, incorrect or imperfect materials in accordance with approved procedures
  16. report any problems outside the limits of your own responsibility to relevant people
  17. complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with organisational requirements

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to receive, interpret and follow work instructions, making use of the information supplied
  2. the preparation required for the safe movement of specific materials
  3. methods of allocation and delivery of supplies
  4. what equipment is needed to safely handle and move materials
  5. what checks on equipment are needed to ensure it is safe
  6. how to report any defects in handling and moving equipment
  7. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  8. how to identify and report damage or problems with materials during handling and movement
  9. actions to take regarding shortfalls and quality problems
  10. the approved operating procedures when using, storing, handling and moving equipment
  11. the checks needed on materials and relevant documentation before handling and movement to ensure correct stock records are kept
  12. how to secure materials during movement and methods for avoiding damage to them
  13. the characteristics of material
  14. maintaining quality and its relation to the end user
  15. how to resolve problems or difficulties arising when moving and storing materials
  16. when the appropriate training or license must have been achieved to use mechanical moving equipment
  17. the importance of teamwork
  18. how to resolve problems within the work area, and within limits of personal responsibility
  19. the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures 
  20. the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
  21. own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
  22. the types of records kept, how they are completed and the importance of accuracy
  23. the importance of complying with written instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions
  24. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
