This standard is about preparing to collect, sort and distribute materials within the organisation.

Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- receive, interpret and follow instructions for moving materials
- collect and sort materials ready for distribution within agreed timescales
- check materials meet requirements, match specifications and are labelled in line with organisational procedures
- allocate specified quantities of materials to specified locations
- identify and select moving equipment that is safe and ready for use
- check that materials to be moved are secure and loaded correct way for the moving equipment being used
- deliver materials to required locations following approved operating procedures
- keep materials and components secure and protected at all times
- use correct handling and moving techniques
- minimise work interruptions and downtime to maintain specified timelines
- work in ways that minimise wastage at all times
- identify problems and take corrective action within the limits of your own responsibility
- store materials in agreed locations following approved operating procedures
- return equipment in a safe condition to its correct location and in accordance with approved operating procedures
- identify, isolate and report damaged, incorrect or imperfect materials in accordance with approved procedures
- report any problems outside the limits of your own responsibility to relevant people
- complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with organisational requirements
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- how to receive, interpret and follow work instructions, making use of the information supplied
- the preparation required for the safe movement of specific materials
- methods of allocation and delivery of supplies
- what equipment is needed to safely handle and move materials
- what checks on equipment are needed to ensure it is safe
- how to report any defects in handling and moving equipment
- the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
- how to identify and report damage or problems with materials during handling and movement
- actions to take regarding shortfalls and quality problems
- the approved operating procedures when using, storing, handling and moving equipment
- the checks needed on materials and relevant documentation before handling and movement to ensure correct stock records are kept
- how to secure materials during movement and methods for avoiding damage to them
- the characteristics of material
- maintaining quality and its relation to the end user
- how to resolve problems or difficulties arising when moving and storing materials
- when the appropriate training or license must have been achieved to use mechanical moving equipment
- the importance of teamwork
- how to resolve problems within the work area, and within limits of personal responsibility
