Overview

This standard is about dyeing fabric and sewn products to meet specification.

This includes preparing the work area and equipment, to carry out the dyeing process, starting and completing the dyeing process and monitoring and controlling the quality of the dyeing process in line with specifications.

This standard is for those who dye fabrics and sewn products to meet given specifications using the appropriate machinery or equipment.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. identify the correct batches of products from specification, jobsheets and identification tags
  2. identify required materials andchemicals against specification
  3. check sufficient quantities of dyes and auxiliaries from the colour mixers or weighers are available
  4. check that relevant risk control measures are in place
  5. identify and report any faults with raw materials in line with agreed procedures
  6. lift and move materials using correct lifting procedures
  7. ensure that work area is suitable and free from hazards and obstructions
  8. load items in the correct way for machine and product type
  9. select appropriate machine program and adjust machine settings and parameters as required for dyeing
  10. carry out start-up checks and report equipment faults or defects in line with agreed procedures
  11. start, carry out and monitor the dyeing process in line with specifications
  12. inspect dyed products and report or rectify faults within limits of own responsibility
  13. colour match dyed items to customer specification
  14. identify, mark and segregate faulty products in line with agreed procedures
  15. forward completed batches to the next stage of production or to a suitable containment or storage area
  16. minimise work interruptions and downtime to maintain production timelines
  17. work in ways that minimise wastage at all times
  18. complete required documentation in line with agreed procedures
  19. comply with organisational procedures and systems of work
  20. clean machinery upon completion of dying in preparation for the next batch 
  21. dispose of waste following organisational procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the types, and importance of, the information given in a process specification and job sheet, identification tags
  2. how to recognise different colours across the full spectrum, and the importance of good colour differentiation
  3. the implications of order size and product type on the dyeing process
  4. the technical considerations with different fibre and fabric type
  5. the levels of product stability throughout the dyeing process
  6. how to identify inherent fabric flaws
  7. the machine programs, settings and adjustments including: liquor, ph levels and ratios, temperatures, pressures and timings
  8. how to load the machine
  9. the dyeing process, including fabric preparation, dyeing and finishing
  10. the materials and chemicals used in different processes and how to handle chemicals in line with statutory requirements
  11. the faults with raw materials or equipment and how to deal with them appropriately
  12. the importance of obtaining sufficient raw materials and support services
  13. why processed and part-processed materials, excess materials and recoverable by-products should be separated out during production
  14. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  15. own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
  16. the importance of monitoring the process and ensuring quality requirements are met
  17. the plant equipment being used, the significance of the boiler for steam, use of the compressor and water softener
  18. the organisational procedures and systems for waste disposal, and their environmental impact
  19. the organisation's rules, codes, guidelines and production targets for your area of responsibility including timekeeping and personal hygiene
  20. the organisations quality standards, systems and procedures
  21. how to monitor quality control in relation to shade, handling and continuity
  22. own limits of personal responsibility
  23. how to communicate effectively with colleagues and customers
  24. the importance of keeping accurate records
  25. how to comply with instructions, safe working practices, equipment operating and cleaning procedures and machine manufacturer's instructions
  26. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations 
  27. how to assess customer needs and meet customer specifications
