Overview
This standard is about pressing items in the sewing room. This can apply to using dry iron, steam iron or vacuum buck methods.
This includes selecting and preparing pressing equipment and work area, selecting and preparing items for pressing, pressing sewn products to specifications and quality standards and carrying out remedial work on finished items to ensure quality.

Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- organise work to be carried out in accordance with instructions and specifications
- select and set equipment to appropriate operating temperatures, times and pressures
- make sure equipment settings are adjusted to achieve product specifications
- check that equipment and operating surfaces are clean and free of contamination
- check care labels and carry out test pressing, identifying and reporting any difficulties in following instructions
- select and prepare items to be pressed and prioritise work to meet production schedules
- press items using the correct method, sequence and time to achieve product specification
- operate pressing equipment in line with safety requirements and manufacturers' instructions according to material type
- minimise work interruptions and downtime to maintain production timelines
- work in ways that minimise wastage at all times
- identify and rectify recoverable faults within the capabilities of the equipment
- check products for faults, before, during and after the pressing operations
- check that the quality and quantity of finished pressed items complies with specifications and production targets
- segregate any products that do not meet the quality standards or specifications
- complete and store work records in line with agreed processes
- transfer pressed items to the next stage of the production process

- the different types of equipment and how they are used to achieve specified results
- how to identify and deal with equipment or product faults which may occur
- the characteristics of differing materials and when to carry out temperature, pressure and steam test

- why pressed items should be protected, and how to do so
- the importance of forwarding products promptly
