Overview

This standard is about pressing items in the sewing room.  This can apply to using dry iron, steam iron or vacuum buck methods.  

This includes selecting and preparing pressing equipment and work area, selecting and preparing items for pressing, pressing sewn products to specifications and quality standards and carrying out remedial work on finished items to ensure quality.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. organise work to be carried out in accordance with instructions and specifications
  2. select and set equipment to appropriate operating temperatures, times and pressures
  3. make sure equipment settings are adjusted to achieve product specifications
  4. check that equipment and operating surfaces are clean and free of contamination
  5. check care labels and carry out test pressing, identifying and reporting any difficulties in following instructions
  6. select and prepare items to be pressed and prioritise work to meet production schedules
  7. press items using the correct method, sequence and time to achieve product specification
  8. operate pressing equipment in line with safety requirements and manufacturers' instructions according to material type
  9. minimise work interruptions and downtime to maintain production timelines
  10. work in ways that minimise wastage at all times
  11. identify and rectify recoverable faults within the capabilities of the equipment
  12. check products for faults, before, during and after the pressing operations
  13. check that the quality and quantity of finished pressed items complies with specifications and production targets
  14. segregate any products that do not meet the quality standards or specifications
  15. complete and store work records in line with agreed processes 
  16. transfer pressed items to the next stage of the production process

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to receive and follow work instructions, making use of the information supplied
  2. the standard size and care labels
  3. the different types of equipment and how they are used to achieve specified results
  4. how to identify and deal with equipment or product faults which may occur
  5. the characteristics of differing materials and when to carry out temperature, pressure and steam test
  6. how to adjust, modify and maintain equipment to achieve required specification of products
  7. the pressing specification and samples
  8. why pressed items should be protected, and how to do so
  9. the importance of forwarding products promptly
  10. the importance of marking and segregating rejects
  11. how to resolve problems within the work area
  12. how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and the limits of your responsibility
  13. the importance of effective communication with colleagues, the lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures 
  14. the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene requirements
  15. the organisation's quality standards
  16. own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
  17. the types of records kept, how are they completed and the importance of accuracy
  18. how to comply with instructions, safe working practices, equipment operating procedures and manufacturer's instructions 
  19. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
