Overview
This standard is about carrying out the seam sealing process for clothing or related items.
This includes preparing tape sealing equipment and work area, obtaining and preparing items for sealing, sealing materials to specification, identifying and reporting defects in final products, forwarding sealed items to the next stage, maintaining records and documentation and complying with organisational procedures.
This standard is for those who prepare and operate machinery and equipment to seal clothing or related products
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- organise work in accordance with instructions and specifications
- identify and report any difficulties in carrying out the instructions in line with agreed procedures
- prepare required sealing equipment for use
- keep work area and equipment free from contaminants and debris at all times
- prepare items for sealing in line with specification
- follow seams and seal products to specification
- operate machinery according to instructions and safety requirements,
- identify any faults and take relevant action to resolve them within own level of responsibility
- monitor and adjust machine performance during sealing processes to keep downtime to a minimum and maintain production
- use correct roller pressure, temperature; speed and air flow for products, adjusting when required
- identify and take relevant action to resolve problems when sealing materials
- work in ways which minimise wastage at all times
- inspect final products against specifications and quality standards and report any defects
- transfer sealed materials to the next stage of the production process
- complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with agreed procedures
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- how to receive and follow work instructions and specifications, making use of the information supplied
- the operating principles of sealing machines, the faults which may occur and how they are rectified
- the importance of keeping the work area clean and free of contaminants
- the types of product faults likely to occur and how they can be rectified
- the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
- the importance of accurate fabric identification, and tape and fabric compatability
- how stitch faults can have an effect on sealing
- the adhering properties of different membranes and adhesive tapes, and their effect on temperature control
- the storage requirements for different types of sealed products
- the importance of reporting defects, marking and segregating rejects
- how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and the limits of own responsibility
- the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures
- the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene requirements
- how to comply with the organisation's specifications, production targets and quality and quantity standards
- own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
- the types of records kept, how are they completed and the importance of accuracy
- how to comply with instructions, safe working practices, equipment operating procedures and manufacturer's instructions
- statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
