Overview
This standard is about cutting materials to form sewn product components. This can apply to using manual, automatic or computer controlled cutting or laying up machines.
This includes preparing cutting equipment, the work area and materials to be used, lay-up and spread of materials for cutting, cutting materials to form components and bundling and labelling cut components. It also covers recognising, reporting and correcting faults that may occur.
This standard is for those who are involved in cutting materials to form sewn product components
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- organise work to be carried out in line with instructions and specifications
- identify any difficulties in carrying out instructions and report them without delay
- identify, set up and use equipment required for work
- identify faulty equipment and take action within the limits of your responsibility
- check that work area, equipment and tools are free from lubricants and debris
- check that materials, templates and lays are confirmed to specifications and free from defects and faults
- identify materials, templates and lays not to specifications and take relevant action
- handle material in ways which prevent damage when preparing for cutting
- match part rolls for colour and integrate into complete job
- identify materials that need to be cut one way
- position and roll out material square, true and flat on cutting area
- identify material faults which exceed specifications limits and take relevant action
- identify acceptable material faults and mark for future identification
- store unused part rolls in designated locations
- plan position of pattern pieces and sequence of marking out to minimise waste, taking into account material width, minor defects and major flaws
- align marked components according to product requirements
- mark out quantity of material within acceptable limits and to specifications using correct marker
- check that marked components are free from major flaws
- identify problems with planning and marking out material and take action in line with agreed procedures
- cut components to marked size and shape within given tolerances
- identify problems in cutting components and take relevant action
- use and maintain cutting equipment and tools in line with safety procedures and manufacturers' instructions
- mark components with accurate information and pass to the next process in line with instructions
- complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with agreed procedures
- place re-usable materials remaining from cutting processes in designated locations
- dispose of waste in designated locations in line with safety procedures, taking into account waste categorisation and recycling
