Overview

This standard is about manufacturing woven textiles in line with quality and quantity requirements.

This includes manufacturing products to specification, following approved work methods and processes and keeping the work areas clean and safe.

This standard is for those who are responsible for preparing and carrying out textiles weaving manufacturing processes.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. carry out preparation activities within agreed timescales
  2. ensure materials match those specified on weaving dockets and tickets
  3. ensure sufficient materials are available to maintain continuity of specified work operations
  4. ensure sample weave on new warps meet those specified is correct within limits of own responsibility
  5. organise work area, resources and equipment to ensure efficiency during work operations
  6. carry out pre-tests on equipment and ensure machinery is in good working order in line with organisational procedures
  7. identify and deal with problems with materials, equipment and machinery in line with organisational procedures
  8. protect materials and products from damage and contamination at all times
  9. use safe, approved working methods for manufacturing processes
  10. process materials to specified quality and quantity
  11. check production against specifications and swatches when required to ensure correct patterns and colours
  12. receive, use and provide information at appropriate times during production cycles,
  13. minimise work interruptions and downtime to maintain production timelines
  14. work in ways that minimise wastage at all times
  15. report any problems in production to the appropriate person without delay
  16. forward labelled, manufactured products according to instructions
  17. complete accurate records and documentation and store them in designated locations
  18. keep work areas and equipment clean, safe and free from waste and cross contamination of yarn fibres from loom to loom at all times
  19. use cleaning equipment and materials using agreed methods in line with safety requirements
  20. carry out daily upkeep of machinery and equipment within limits of own responsibility in line with organisational procedures
  21. carry out handover operations in line with organisational procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. receive work instructions and specifications and make use of the information supplied
  2. the importance of keeping the work area and equipment clean and free from waste, and cross contamination of yarn fibres
  3. the types of cleaning equipment and materials used, and routine cleaning procedures and their importance
  4. the types of daily upkeep of machinery and equipment within the limits of own responsibility
  5. how the supply of materials is maintained and how they are checked against specification
  6. how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility
  7. what checks are done on equipment and machinery
  8. the types of problems which occur with materials and equipment and the action to take
  9. information to send and receive during production cycles including those relating to production efficiency and yarn breakages
  10. how to present any ideas for improvement to line manager
  11. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  12. how to maintain the flow of production
  13. the importance of achieving quality and its relation to the end user or customer
  14. procedures for working with compressed air
  15. how to resolve problems within the work area, and within limits of personal responsibility
  16. the importance of effective communication with colleagues, the lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures 
  17. the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
  18. the organisation's quality standards
  19. own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
  20. the types of records kept including technical, how they are completed and the importance of accuracy
  21. the importance of complying with instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions
  22. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
