Overview
This standard is about monitoring the quality of own production activities to ensure that products they produce continue to meet specification.
This includes inspecting materials and products during production, identifying problems and irregularities, finding the cause of faults in materials and products and taking appropriate corrective action and working in line with quality approved systems and reporting procedures.
This standard is for those who monitor the quality of their own production activities and ensure products continue to meet specifications.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- check materials and component parts meet specification
- report faulty materials and component parts which do not meet specifications in line with agreed procedures
- identify and replace faulty materials and component parts so that specifications are met
- identify, set up and test equipment to meet quality standards
- carry out quality checks at agreed intervals and using approved methods
- check products are within allowed tolerances of quality specifications during production
- identify process problems that affect product quality and report them to appropriate people without delay
- maintain continuity of production with minimum interruptions and downtime
- identify faults and irregularities in equipment and machinery and take action within the limits of own responsibility
- identify and trace causes of faults in finished products
- follow reporting procedures where causes of faults cannot be identified
- maintain required productivity and quality levels
- complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with agreed procedures
- comply with workplace operating procedures and health and safety requirements
- complete work activities in line with the production flow
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- how to receive and follow work instructions and specifications making use of the information supplied
- the types of faults in equipment and machinery and the action to be taken when they occur
- the types of faults in materials and components which need replacing and the action to be taken
- how to identify materials which do not conform to requirements and how to report them to appropriate people
- how to interpret care and fabric content labels and symbols
- the types of problems that may occur during processing and how to rectify these
- the types of adjustments and potential solutions that can be used to rectify specific faults
- handling techniques for different materials
- the different types of material, fabric and yarn types
- how to identify and report problems with quality to appropriate people
- the consequences of not rectifying problems or faults
- inspection methods and techniques
- the causes of lost production and material wastage
- how to maintain the flow of production
- how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and the limits of your responsibility
- how to work in a team and the importance of effective communication with colleagues
- the lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures
- the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines - including timekeeping and personal hygiene requirements
- the organisation's quality standards and quality control procedures and how to follow them
- the importance of achieving quality and its relation to the end user or customer
- own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
- how to present ideas for improvement to line manager
- the types of records that are kept, including quality, how are they completed and the importance of accuracy
- how to comply with instructions, safe working practices, equipment operating procedures and manufacturer's instructions
