Overview

This standard is about organising and controlling the work of the knitting department and ensuring knitted products are manufactured to specification.

It includes monitoring machinery and equipment during knitted fabric production and maintaining productivity levels and quality standards.

This standard is for those control the efficiency of the knitting process (warp and weft) such as a supervisor or head mechanic.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. carry out shift change operations in accordance with specified procedures
  2. follow work instructions and specifications at all times
  3. ensure materials, machinery and equipment meet specification
  4. identify and take appropriate action within your own area of responsibility if materials, machinery or equipment fail to match specification
  5. carry out daily maintenance in accordance with specified procedures and within limits of responsibility
  6. check that required machinery parts are available to meet maintenance schedules
  7. follow repair schedules to maintain production targets
  8. keep work area clean and safe in accordance with specified procedures
  9. set, test and monitor machinery to produce knitted materials to specification
  10. oversee materials and equipment against specifications during processing
  11. check that appropriate work methods are in use within agreed time schedules
  12. plan for style and size changes in line with agreed procedures
  13. plan for knitters and examiners workloads so that quality is maintained
  14. work in ways that minimise wastage at all times
  15. maintain productivity and quality levels to meet specification, keeping downtime to a minimum
  16. plan any required changeover of yarn creels or warper beams at times which maximise productivity
  17. check specifications are met, and sample pieces are recorded in line with agreed procedures
  18. ensure first bags and pilots are completed when requested
  19. pass on essential information and any instructions at changeover points during production
  20. liaise with management to ensure seamless production and changeover operations and planning
  21. develop team activities which ensure understanding of new products and specifications
  22. complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with agreed procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to receive, interpret and follow work instructions, making use of the information supplied
  2. how to plan and prepare work activities to maintain continuity of operations
  3. the principles of knitting
  4. the characteristics of yarns to be processed; count, gauge, elasticity, material and how to handle them
  5. the capabilities of machinery to be used and actions to be taken when it does not conform to specification
  6. the appropriate procedure to follow to obtain the spare parts required
  7. the importance of maintaining a clean and safe work area
  8. how to prepare work schedules and plans for knitters and examiners
  9. how to relate quality to end user or customer
  10. the importance of teamwork and how to resolve problems within the work area
  11. how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility
  12. the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures 
  13. the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
  14. own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
  15. the types of records kept, including maintenance log schedules, how they are completed and the importance of accuracy
  16. the importance of complying with written instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions
  17. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
