Overview

This standard is about manufacturing warp, weft and circular knitted textiles.  This can apply to textile fabrics or garments (flat or fully fashioned) using warp knitting, weft knitting or (fine gauge) circular knitting machinery.

It includes preparing for the knitting process, manufacturing products and keeping the work area safe and clean.

This standard is for knitters who knit textile fabrics or garments (flat or fully fashioned) using warp knitting, weft knitting or (fine gauge) circular knitting machinery.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. follow instructions, specifications and customer designs or requests when manufacturing knitted textiles
  2. select sufficient quantities of specified resources
  3. take action in line with agreed procedures when yarns, machine or products do not meet requirements
  4. protect resources from damage and contamination at all times
  5. organise resources, equipment and work area to ensure efficient operations and in accordance with specified procedures
  6. ensure yarn being used is correct in line with knitting specifications or style cards
  7. check equipment and machinery is in good working order and ready for use
  8. ensure machines are threaded and programmed as specified
  9. set and adjust tension to meet specifications throughout manufacturing
  10. knit products and fabrics to the required quality and quantity using approved working methods
  11. check knitted samples against specification
  12. adjust processing parameters following feedback from product checks against specification
  13. bundle components for make-up when specified
  14. detect faults in knitted products and repair when possible
  15. report faults which cannot be repaired to the appropriate person
  16. identify, take relevant action within limits of own responsibility and report problems with yarns, equipment, machinery,
  17. keep the work area clean and safe throughout operations
  18. carry out daily upkeep of machinery and equipment
  19. check safety devices and guards are in place and operating as required
  20. complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with agreed procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to receive, interpret and follow work instructions, specifications, customer designs and requests, making use of the information supplied
  2. how and when to provide information to others during production
  3. ways of planning work activities to maintain continuity of operations
  4. the principles of knitting
  5. the importance of manual dexterity and attention to detail
  6. the terminology used in knitting; knit, miss tuck etc
  7. preparation activities prior to work operations; preparing bobbins, creels, beams as appropriate
  8. characteristics of yarns; count, gauge, elasticity, material and how to handle them
  9. how to interpret knitting charts
  10. why and how to adjust tension for each section in fully fashioned knitting
  11. how to report non-conforming yarns
  12. the capabilities of machinery to be used and actions to be taken when it does not conform
  13. internal and external customer quality requirements
  14. how to minimise lost production and material wastage
  15. the garment or fabric production process
  16. importance of maintaining a clean and safe work area and machinery free from waste and metal contamination
  17. the importance of teamwork, how to resolve problems and faults within the work area, and within limits of personal responsibility
  18. how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility
  19. the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures 
  20. the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
  21. own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
  22. the types of records kept including for handover, how they are completed and the importance of accuracy
  23. the importance of complying with written instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions
  24. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
