Overview
This standard is about preparing yarn for weft or circular knitting. This can be before starting weft knitting or between style changes.
This includes checking and preparing machines prior to operation, preparing the weft or yarn and setting up machines for knitting.
This standard is for knitting technicians who carry out essential preparatory operations prior to starting the weft knitting process or between style changes.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- follow work instructions and specifications at all times
- obtain required resources to meet specifications
- check machines are ready for use and arrange resources and equipment to ensure efficient operations
- take action in line with agreed procedures when resources and equipment do not meet requirements
- protect resources from damage and contamination at all times
- selected the correct yarn to meet specification
- remove any existing yarn from machines before use
- plan the order in which wefts are to be threaded
- thread wefts following specified paths or as per specification
- thread the correct yarn in specified feeders
- load correct programs into knitting machines
- knit first product or sample off machine and check for correct measurements
- adjust yarn tension at creel or other locations as required
- gain machine sign-off prior to knitting
- identify and address problems within limits of own responsibility
- inform relevant person of problems encountered in line with agreed procedures
- keep work area clean and safe throughout operations
- prepare work area in sufficient time for next stage of work operations
- complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with agreed procedures
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- How to receive, interpret and follow work instructions, making use of the information supplied
- how to plan and prepare work activities to maintain continuity of operations
- the principles of knitting
- the importance of manual dexterity and attention to detail
- the characteristics of yarn (count, gauge, elasticity, material) and how to handle them
- the capabilities of equipment to be used and actions to be taken when it does not conform to specification
- how to interpret weft knitting docket or specification
- the importance of maintaining a clean and safe work area
- how to thread guide bars to meet specification
- how to adjust yarn tension on the creel, the tensioning devices used and how to adjust them
- the garment or fabric manufacturing process
- threading up techniques according to machine type
- how to plan threading up plans correctly
- how to relate quality to the end user or customer
- the importance of teamwork and how to resolve problems within the work area
- how preparation of work areas for next stages of operation can help ensure efficiency
- how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility
- the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures
- the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
- the organisation's quality standards
- own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
- the types of records kept, how they are completed and the importance of accuracy
