Overview

This standard is about preparing yearn for warp knitting.

This includes preparing the warp beam, preparing the creel, preparing machinery for work operations, gathering appropriate resources and ensuring equipment is in good order to meet work instructions or docket specification.

This standard is for those who carry out
essential preparatory operations prior to starting the warp knitting process.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. work in line with work instructions and docket specifications at all times
  2. obtain sufficient quantities of specified resources
  3. protect resources from damage and contamination at all times
  4. check equipment is ready for use and arrange resources and equipment to ensure efficient operations
  5. take action in line with agreed procedures when resources and equipment do not meet requirements
  6. certify correct setts are loaded before warps are drawn
  7. draw ends in line with agreed procedures
  8. check that creels, machines and any other equipment are clean and ready for use
  9. select the correct yarn in line with docket specifications
  10. remove any existing yarn on creels before use
  11. plan creels in sections according to the number of guide bars being used
  12. thread correct numbers of bobbins in the order specified for each guide bar
  13. draw warps in the correct order to the correct set of rollers
  14. thread following specified warp paths
  15. thread guide bars in accordance with patterns specified
  16. ensure correct endage of sections or tape is achieved
  17. forward warp sheets to next location in line with safety procedures
  18. ensure new beams are efficiently loaded onto looms
  19. keep work area clean and safe throughout operations
  20. prepare work area in sufficient time for next stage of work operations
  21. identify problems and address them within the limits of own responsibility
  22. inform the relevant person of problems encountered in line with agreed procedures
  23. complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with agreed procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to receive, interpret and follow work instructions, making use of the information supplied
  2. how to plan and prepare work activities to maintain continuity of operations
  3. the principles of knitting
  4. the importance of manual dexterity and attention to detail
  5. the characteristics of yarn including, count, gauge, elasticity, material and how to handle them
  6. capabilities of equipment to be used and actions to be taken when it does not conform to specification
  7. yarn properties and their effect on the warp beam including twist level, direction, liveliness, tension
  8. the importance of maintaining a clean and safe work area
  9. how to clean the creel sufficiently to prevent contamination
  10. how to thread guide bars to meet specification
  11. threading up techniques according to machine type
  12. how to plan threading up plans correctly
  13. the garment or fabric manufacturing process
  14. how to relate quality to the end user or customer
  15. the importance of teamwork and how to resolve problems within the work area
  16. how preparation of work areas for next stages of operation can help ensure efficiency
  17. how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility
  18. the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures 
  19. the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
  20. the organisation's quality standards
  21. own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
  22. the types of records kept, how they are completed and the importance of accuracy
  23. the importance of complying with written instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions 
  24. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
