Overview
This standard is about preparing yearn for warp knitting.
This includes preparing the warp beam, preparing the creel, preparing machinery for work operations, gathering appropriate resources and ensuring equipment is in good order to meet work instructions or docket specification.
This standard is for those who carry out
essential preparatory operations prior to starting the warp knitting process.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- work in line with work instructions and docket specifications at all times
- obtain sufficient quantities of specified resources
- protect resources from damage and contamination at all times
- check equipment is ready for use and arrange resources and equipment to ensure efficient operations
- take action in line with agreed procedures when resources and equipment do not meet requirements
- certify correct setts are loaded before warps are drawn
- draw ends in line with agreed procedures
- check that creels, machines and any other equipment are clean and ready for use
- select the correct yarn in line with docket specifications
- remove any existing yarn on creels before use
- plan creels in sections according to the number of guide bars being used
- thread correct numbers of bobbins in the order specified for each guide bar
- draw warps in the correct order to the correct set of rollers
- thread following specified warp paths
- thread guide bars in accordance with patterns specified
- ensure correct endage of sections or tape is achieved
- forward warp sheets to next location in line with safety procedures
- ensure new beams are efficiently loaded onto looms
- keep work area clean and safe throughout operations
- prepare work area in sufficient time for next stage of work operations
- identify problems and address them within the limits of own responsibility
- inform the relevant person of problems encountered in line with agreed procedures
- complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with agreed procedures
Knowledge and Understanding

- how to receive, interpret and follow work instructions, making use of the information supplied
- how to plan and prepare work activities to maintain continuity of operations
- the principles of knitting
- the importance of manual dexterity and attention to detail
- the characteristics of yarn including, count, gauge, elasticity, material and how to handle them
- capabilities of equipment to be used and actions to be taken when it does not conform to specification
- yarn properties and their effect on the warp beam including twist level, direction, liveliness, tension
- the importance of maintaining a clean and safe work area
- how to clean the creel sufficiently to prevent contamination
- how to thread guide bars to meet specification
- threading up techniques according to machine type
- how to plan threading up plans correctly
- the garment or fabric manufacturing process
- how to relate quality to the end user or customer
- the importance of teamwork and how to resolve problems within the work area
- how preparation of work areas for next stages of operation can help ensure efficiency
- how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility
- the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures
- the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
- the organisation's quality standards
- own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
