Overview
This standard is about manufacturing finished yarn bobbins.
This includes selecting required yarn, preparing yarn, ensuring correct yarn of correct count is used, twisting yarn, and producing yarn bobbins.
This standard is for those who produce finished bobbins of yarn.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- follow instructions and product specifications for each package of yarns
- keep work area clean, safe and free from obstruction at all times
- organise work area to meet yarn preparation requirements
- check equipment and tools are in good working order and are ready for use in accordance with agreed procedures
- identify and select yarn of the composition, count and colour identified on work tickets
- twist an adequate amount of yarn in line with specification
- protect yarns from dirt and damage at all times
- report any faults to the right person
- prepare specified bobbins for use
- place the correct amount of twisted yarn onto each bobbin
- label each bobbin with clear information
- confirm and record finished products are correct to specifications
- identify and isolate imperfect yarn following agreed procedures
- handle all products with care in accordance with agreed procedures
- store completed bobbins in correct locations
- complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with agreed procedures
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- how to receive, interpret and follow work instructions, making use of the information supplied
- the principles of knitting
- the checks needed to ensure yarn for production is correct for quality and quantity
- basic characteristics of yarn, how to identify the differences between different yarn characteristics, and their effect on production
- how to protect products from damage and contamination during production
- how to report products which do not conform to specification and to whom
- the importance of manual dexterity and attention to detail
- how to keep records correctly and pass onto subsequent processing stage
- the importance of accurate stock yarn records, and the process of processing residue yarn
- the yarn tension and how to adjust it to specification
- correct labelling of bobbins of yarn
- the garment or fabric manufacturing process
- how to resolve problems within the work area
- how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility
- the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures
- the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
- the organisation's quality standards
- own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
- the types of records kept, how they are completed and the importance of accuracy
- the importance of complying with written instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions
