Overview
This standard is about receiving storing and issuing raw material yarn.
This includes receiving yarn delivery, checking yarn received, storing yarn, stock taking and issuing yarn to knitting operations.
This standard is for those who receive, store and issue raw material yarn.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- prepare work area for receipt of yarn delivery
- check equipment to transport yarn is in good working order
- receive yarn delivery in line with agreed procedures
- check received yarn against delivery documents
- handle yarn with care and in accordance with agreed procedures
- record and 'book in' yarn in that has been delivered in line with agreed procedures
- check yarn characteristics, identifying and isolating imperfect yarn in line with agreed procedures
- ensure all boxes are labelled with correct internal labels
- store yarn in correct locations, ensuring it is free from potential damage in yarn stores and knitting departments
- organise and prepare yarn for distribution in line with agreed procedures
- supply knitting operations with correct yarns in correct bays
- record 'booked out' yarn in line with agreed procedures once issued to knitting operations
- inform yarn buyers of any non-conformances with yarn received
- complete stock takes at specified intervals
- keep work and storage area clean, tidy and free from hazards at all times
- complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with agreed procedures
Knowledge and Understanding

- how to receive, interpret and follow work instructions, making use of the information supplied
- the principles of knitting
- how to interpret delivery documentation
- manual handling and lifting procedures
- how to check the yarn count is correct for quantity and quality
- the characteristics of yarn
- the methods required to ensure yarn is handled and stored correctly
- how to book in and locate yarn to correct location
- how to identify knitting operation yarn requirements and ensure the correct yarns are issued
- how to book out yarn used by the knitting operation
- how to complete stock checks
- the importance of maintaining a clean and safe work area
- the garment or fabric manufacturing process
- the principles of team work
- how to resolve problems within the work area
- how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility
- the importance of effective communication with colleagues, the lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures
- the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
- the organisation's quality standards
- own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
- the types of records kept, how they are completed and the importance of accuracy
- the importance of complying with written instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions
