Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. work in line with work instructions and specifications
  2. organise and keep the work area clean and safe to meet production requirements
  3. ensure equipment and machinery is in good working order and ready for use within your own areas of responsibility
  4. ensure materials match dockets or tickets
  5. select correct fibres or composition
  6. check that fibres to be used are protected from contamination and damage
  7. check given materials are carded to specification
  8. use correct needles for fibres and correct single or double needle beds for resultant materials
  9. use correct machine settings to meet required fabric specifications
  10. use correct speed of material delivery to feed components
  11. process materials to required quality and quantities
  12. check production meets specification
  13. check weight of produced fabric against specification
  14. identify, take relevant action and report problems with materials, equipment and machinery in line with agreed procedures
  15. handle products with care in accordance with agreed procedures
  16. regulate processes for performance or to add additional additives for bonding
  17. label manufactured products with clear information and forward according to instructions
  18. confirm that finished product meet specification
  19. record fabric details for future reference following agreed procedures
  20. identify and isolate imperfect fabric or broken needles following agreed procedures
  21. remove fabric in the correct manner to ensure seamless loading onto machines
  22. use cleaning equipment and materials in line with safety procedures
  23. ensure dust filters are maintained in line with agreed procedures
  24. monitor static electricity levels and humidity levels at specified intervals  
  25. complete takeover operations or shift change according to agreed procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to receive, interpret and follow work instructions and specifications, making use of the information supplied
  2. the importance of keeping the work area and equipment clean and free from waste, and cross contamination of yarn fibres
  3. how to remove the fly from machine and carding machine to prevent cross contamination and clogging
  4. the types of cleaning equipment and materials used and routine cleaning procedures and their importance
  5. how to check and maintain machinery and equipment within the limits of own responsibility
  6. how to ensure machine parameters can meet given production specification
  7. relevant information to use and provide during production cycles including that relating to production efficiency, fibre or needle breakages
  8. how the supply of materials is maintained and how they are checked against specification
  9. the types of problems which occur with materials and equipment and the action to take
  10. the implications of the use of wrong needles and breakages in end fabric
  11. understand causes of lost production and material wastage
  12. ensuring quality is achieved and its relation to the end user or customer is understood
  13. the importance of achieving quality and its relation to the end user or customer
  14. how to resolve problems within the work area
  15. how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility
  16. the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures 
  17. the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
  18. own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
  19. the types of records and data kept, including at start-up and changeover information, how they are completed and the importance of accuracy
  20. the importance of complying with written instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions 
  21. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
