Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- work in line with work instructions and specifications
- organise and keep the work area clean and safe to meet production requirements
- ensure equipment and machinery is in good working order and ready for use within your own areas of responsibility
- ensure materials match dockets or tickets
- select correct fibres or composition
- check that fibres to be used are protected from contamination and damage
- check given materials are carded to specification
- use correct needles for fibres and correct single or double needle beds for resultant materials
- use correct machine settings to meet required fabric specifications
- use correct speed of material delivery to feed components
- process materials to required quality and quantities
- check production meets specification
- check weight of produced fabric against specification
- identify, take relevant action and report problems with materials, equipment and machinery in line with agreed procedures
- handle products with care in accordance with agreed procedures
- regulate processes for performance or to add additional additives for bonding
- label manufactured products with clear information and forward according to instructions
- confirm that finished product meet specification
- record fabric details for future reference following agreed procedures
- identify and isolate imperfect fabric or broken needles following agreed procedures
- remove fabric in the correct manner to ensure seamless loading onto machines
- use cleaning equipment and materials in line with safety procedures
- ensure dust filters are maintained in line with agreed procedures
- monitor static electricity levels and humidity levels at specified intervals
- complete takeover operations or shift change according to agreed procedures
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- how to receive, interpret and follow work instructions and specifications, making use of the information supplied
- the importance of keeping the work area and equipment clean and free from waste, and cross contamination of yarn fibres
- how to remove the fly from machine and carding machine to prevent cross contamination and clogging
- the types of cleaning equipment and materials used and routine cleaning procedures and their importance
- how to check and maintain machinery and equipment within the limits of own responsibility
- how to ensure machine parameters can meet given production specification
- relevant information to use and provide during production cycles including that relating to production efficiency, fibre or needle breakages
- how the supply of materials is maintained and how they are checked against specification
- the types of problems which occur with materials and equipment and the action to take
- the implications of the use of wrong needles and breakages in end fabric
- understand causes of lost production and material wastage
- ensuring quality is achieved and its relation to the end user or customer is understood
- the importance of achieving quality and its relation to the end user or customer
- how to resolve problems within the work area
- how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility
- the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures
- the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
- own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
- the types of records and data kept, including at start-up and changeover information, how they are completed and the importance of accuracy
- the importance of complying with written instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions
