Overview

This standard is about calibrating production equipment.

This includes performing calibration on production equipment and identifying and dealing with calibration problems.

This standard is for those who carry out routine calibrations at prescribed intervals in order to keep equipment in calibration.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. conduct routine calibration at prescribed intervals
  2. maintain calibration equipment in working order
  3. interpret calibration results and check that equipment remains serviceable
  4. inform those responsible if calibration reveals results that are not within specified operational limits
  5. inform those affected when equipment is out of calibration
  6. label equipment that is out of calibration with clear and accurate information to indicate status
  7. take appropriate action in the event of abnormal occurrences or malfunction
  8. minimise hazards, loss of materials or data and adverse effects of equipment being out of calibration in line with agreed procedures
  9. identify factors affecting performance of calibrated equipment
  10. identify equipment which cannot be calibrated to standard operating specifications and label them in line with agreed procedures
  11. inform those responsible and those affected about equipment which cannot be calibrated
  12. clean, store and dispose of calibration equipment and materials according to standard operating procedures
  13. update and store accurate and legible calibration records and documentation in line with agreed procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to receive, interpret and follow work instructions, making use of the information supplied
  2. how to maintain the integrity of calibration equipment and materials in line with internal and external standards, traceability, verification, valid certification, storage and handling conditions
  3. appropriate marking requirements for calibration equipment and materials
  4. the potential impact of non-conformance
  5. the key features of traceability
  6. acceptable tolerances and the units of measurement to be used
  7. the actions to take in the event of abnormal occurrences
  8. the actions to take in the event of non-calibration including; referral to an internal standards organisation, replacement, arrangement for repair or disposal
  9. the principles and importance of calibration and calibration requirements
  10. appropriate calibration procedures and routines
  11. labelling systems used and their implications
  12. the appropriate cleaning materials and methods
  13. methods of recording calibration status
  14. how to control conditions for calibration
  15. how to maintain the integrity of standards being used in calibration
  16. the importance of achieving quality and its relation to the end user or customer
  17. how to resolve problems within the work area, and within limits of personal responsibility
  18. how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility
  19. the importance of effective communication with colleagues, the lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures 
  20. the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
  21. own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
  22. the types of reports, records and data kept, how these are completed and the importance of accuracy
  23. the importance of complying with written instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions
  24. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
