Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. work in line with instructions, specifications and samples
  2. identify and select textile testing routines to suit specifications and samples
  3. plan and prioritise testing routines in line with instructions
  4. ensure equipment is within calibration and maintain calibration records
  5. carry out textile testing routines in line with agreed procedures
  6. check test procedures are followed and meet customer requirements
  7. monitor testing routines at specified intervals
  8. deal with abnormal occurrences using approved interpretive techniques, organising additional testing when required
  9. confirm environmental and health and safety requirements are met
  10. dispose of waste in accordance with organisational procedures
  11. analyse test results, ensuring results are valid and reliable
  12. evaluate data against required outcomes, identifying any deviations
  13. investigate problems and recommend corrective action when required
  14. draw valid conclusions from processed data
  15. complete reports and make recommendations in required formats
  16. complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with agreed procedures
  17. present results to appropriate people within agreed timescales

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to receive, interpret and follow work instructions, samples and specifications making use of the information supplied
  2. the principles and purpose of testing
  3. how to select appropriate testing methods and appropriate testing equipment
  4. the methods to use to control variables
  5. how to accurately follow test procedures
  6. health, safety and environmental requirements and procedures for testing
  7. ways of ensuring the serviceability of equipment and action to take when it is defective
  8. how to identify and check the integrity of the sample
  9. methods of safe storage
  10. the types of abnormal occurrence and how to deal with them
  11. how to identify and validate data to required levels of accuracy
  12. the required units of measurement
  13. statistical and mathematical techniques applicable to data
  14. the tolerance limits of results
  15. methods of dealing with deviations, and procedures for, correcting data
  16. how to recognise anomalies in data against standard operating procedures
  17. the appropriate interpretative techniques to use
  18. procedures for recording, storing and retrieving data
  19. reporting procedures and report writing techniques
  20. the importance of achieving quality and its relation to the end user or customer
  21. how to resolve problems within the work area
  22. how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility
  23. the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures 
  24. the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
  25. own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
  26. the types of records kept, how they are completed and the importance of accuracy
  27. the importance of complying with instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions
  28. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
