Overview

This standard is about preparing warps for weaving including knotting or headling warps.

This includes preparing machinery, gathering appropriate resources, checking equipment is in good order, working to and sampling work against specification and removing finished rollers. It also includes releasing, moving and fitting beams, preparing warps over frames or knotting, drawing warps through heads and beads, filling heads with ends, replacing selvedge and leno ends and changing weft, designs and picks.

This standard is for those who carry out essential preparatory operations prior to starting the weaving process.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. carry out required preparation activities within agreed timescale
  2. maintain a clean and safe work area at all times
  3. select and check required resources in line with specifications
  4. ensure sufficient resources are available to maintain continuity of specified work operations
  5. report resources which do not conform to specifications to the appropriate person
  6. organise work area, resources and equipment to ensure efficiency during work operations
  7. ensure equipment is ready for use in order to meet requirements
  8. protect resources from damage and contamination at all times
  9. confirm preparation activities are correct and complete
  10. release and remove beams from looms in line with procedures
  11. fit new beams in line with procedures
  12. prepare new warps over frames and knotting in line with procedures
  13. draw warp through heads and reeds in line with procedures
  14. fill all heads with ends in line with procedures
  15. replace selvedge and leno ends in line with procedures
  16. change weft, designs and picks when required
  17. sample weaves when required to ensure products meet given specifications and dockets
  18. remove finished rollers to cloth inspection areas when required in line with procedures
  19. carry out takeover operations in line with procedures
  20. complete accurate records and documentation and store them in designated locations

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to receive and follow work instructions, making use of the information supplied
  2. how to plan and prepare work activities to maintain continuity of operations
  3. the characteristics of materials to be processed and how to handle them
  4. the capabilities of equipment to be used and actions to be taken when it does not conform to specification
  5. how to interpret weaving dockets, to certify correct setts loaded before warp drawn
  6. how to load new beams onto looms efficiently
  7. how and when to release, move and fit beams
  8. how and when to prepare warps over frames and knotting
  9. how and when to draw warps through heads and beads
  10. how to check all ends are accurately filled
  11. how and when to replace selvedge and leno ends
  12. how and when to change weft, designs and picks
  13. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  14. the importance of maintaining a clean and safe work area
  15. how to resolve problems within the work area, and within limits of personal responsibility hygiene
  16. how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and the limits of your responsibility
  17. the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures 
  18. the organisation's procedures, rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
  19. the organisation's quality standards
