Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. work in line with work instructions and specifications
  2. establish customer requirements in line with agreed procedures
  3. assess customer requirements against production facilities
  4. establish quality requirements in line with specifications
  5. assess relevant technical information to formulate production processes
  6. assess suitable process methods and cycles for bulk production
  7. select the most appropriate production processes to achieve customer requirements
  8. confirm that the nature and condition of substrates are suitable for processing
  9. select suitable dyestuffs and auxiliary materials
  10. produce accurate scale up quantities
  11. select test methods that will give an accurate assessment
  12. make adjustments to formulations when required for finishing processes
  13. provide relevant information to support the development of production specifications and instructions
  14. select suitable finishing processes for substrates and end uses
  15. select finishing equipment which is compatible with bulk production methods
  16. complete finishing instructions and supply them to appropriate people
  17. seek customer approval when required in line with agreed procedures
  18. complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with agreed procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to receive and follow work instructions, making use of the information supplied
  2. how to establish customer requirements and specifications
  3. the finishing systems and bulk production methods
  4. methods of formulating production routines based on machine capabilities
  5. how to achieve end-product characteristics
  6. the condition and types of substrate, their characteristics and the remedial action to be taken when required
  7. the chemicals used and their effect on finishing processes
  8. the critical factors in the selection of finishes and auxiliary materials
  9. how to scale up finishes and auxiliary materials

  10. the adjustments to make to achieve a cost-effective finishing specification

  11. the importance of achieving quality and its relation to the end user or customer
  12. how to resolve problems within the work area, and within limits of personal responsibility
  13. how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility and limits of your own responsibility
  14. the importance of effective communication with colleagues, the lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures 
  15. the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
  16. the organisation's quality standards
  17. own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
  18. the types of records kept, how they are completed and the importance of accuracy
  19. the importance of complying with instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions
