Overview
This standard is about developing designs for textile products from initial conception to final sample.
This includes identifying customer requirements, working to a design brief, producing a visual interpretation of designs, developing design samples identifying cost-effective methods of producing first samples, producing samples and specifications and finalising designs.
This standard is for those who develop designs for textile products.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- follow design briefs, specifications and work information at all times
- research viable options for meeting customer requirements
- develop initial design concepts in line with customer requirements
- research sources of materials and components which meet cost constraints
- select suitable, available materials and components
- produce visual interpretations of designs
- agree cost-effective methods to produce design samples
- seek customer approval for visual interpretation of designs
- produce accurate information and prototype design specifications for sample production
- check samples meet specifications requirements throughout development
- identify and gain approval for required modifications to designs or specifications
- ensure samples are tested to meet customer requirements
- identify and store approved samples in agreed places
- check approved samples and final specifications are complete, named and labelled with accurate information and available to appropriate people
- check customer sampling requirements are met within agreed timescales
- record customer requirements and design development processes in line with agreed procedures
- complete and store specifications and sample products in accordance with approved safety and organisational procedures
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- how to receive, interpret and follow work instructions, making use of the information supplied
- how to research design trends, competitor markets and market developments
- the sources of records, archives and sample libraries and how to make effective use of them
- the production processes and machine capabilities
- materials and their characteristics, lifecycle of the product
- the construction of textile products
- the customer's pricing structures and policies
- how to establish the fitness for purpose of the textile product
- the types of visual interpretation
- the customer sampling and approval procedures
- the importance of achieving quality and its relation to the end users and customers
- how to resolve problems within own work area
- how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility
- the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures
- the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
- own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
- the types of sampling records kept, how they are completed and the importance of accuracy
- the importance of complying with briefs, instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions
- statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
