Overview
This standard is about conducting pre-production trials prior to bulk production.
This includes monitoring the critical path of trial production, selecting materials, components, machinery and equipment for trials, checking the outcomes of trial production against specifications, evaluating the results of trials and providing information for bulk production.

Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- work in line with work instructions and specifications
- plan pre-production trials in line with scheduling requirements
- develop a critical path of activities for each stage of pre-production trials
- check that accurate information, complete specifications and relevant samples are available when required
- ensure authority has been given for pre-production trials and is communicated to relevant people
- carry out pre-production trials in line with work instructions and specifications
- monitor and record the progress of products during trial processes
- check products made in pre-production trials meets specifications
- identify problems and recommend corrective action in line with agreed procedures
- modify specifications to achieve cost effective results
- check trial results and products meet specifications after pre-production methods have been amended
- record results and evaluate outcomes of pre-production trials
- evaluate the potential for bulk processing, determining likely materials to be used and production rates
- provide information and trial results to appropriate people
- recommend ways to improve production efficiency to relevant people
- provide relevant information to support the development of final production specifications
- ensure samples and trial products are approved and authority given for bulk production to commence
- complete and store accurate trial records and documentation in line with agreed procedures
