Overview

This standard is about servicing textile machinery and equipment.

This includes testing and diagnosing faults, dismantling, replacing and assembling machines or equipment, components and component parts and confirming the machinery or equipment is fit to return to production.

This standard is for those who plan, set up and carry out servicing procedures for textile machinery and equipment.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. plan own work to meet work instructions and specifications
  2. secure and isolate areas in which equipment is to be serviced
  3. carry out risk assessments on textile machinery and equipment before servicing
  4. check that replacement parts meet specification
  5. agree action with appropriate people when specified replacements are not available
  6. get authorisation for your work in line with authorisation procedures
  7. check equipment, components and component parts are clean, protected and fit for purpose
  8. service equipment within agreed schedules
  9. assemble and fit components and component parts to meet specifications according to manufacturers' instructions
  10. work safely following agreed procedures causing minimum disruption to production
  11. interpret machine manuals and drawings and use logical fault finding methods to identify problems
  12. dismantle, replace and re-assemble equipment and components parts when required in line with manufacturers' instructions
  13. carry out test runs using machinery or equipment after servicing or replacement
  14. return textile machinery to production in line with agreed procedures
  15. monitor new components and component parts over an agreed period and record results
  16. complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with agreed procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to receive and follow work instructions, making use of the information supplied
  2. the component parts of the textile machinery and their functions
  3. the sources of component supply, how to order spare components, how to store the components and component parts
  4. how to complete a risk assessment for textile machinery and equipment
  5. how to use fault finding principles and techniques,
  6. how to interpret and apply information from machine manuals and drawings to identify faults
  7. use machine and component drawings
  8. routine maintenance procedures and schedules
  9. the procedures to follow for isolating machinery
  10. the operating conditions and applications for a range of lubricants
  11. how to use lifting and slinging techniques
  12. the effect of downtime and material wastage on operating costs
  13. electrical and mechanical safe working practices
  14. procedures for use of test equipment, tools and their correct application
  15. the types of pre-production tests to use, how to record results and reporting procedures
  16. the technical tolerances of machinery and operating characteristics
  17. commonly occurring faults and their diagnosis
  18. the sources of technical data on materials, equipment, machinery and processes
  19. the compatibility of textile machinery and products including the characteristics of materials used
  20. the implications of incorrect use of machinery operations within the production process
  21. how to test machinery and equipment after maintenance and fault rectification
  22. how to resolve problems within the work area, and within limits of personal responsibility
  23. how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and the limits of your responsibility
  24. the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures 
  25. the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
  26. the organisation's quality standards
  27. own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
  28. the types of records kept, including maintenance, how are they completed and the importance of accuracy
  29. the importance of complying with instructions, equipment operating procedures and manufacturers' instructions
  30. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
