Overview

This standard is about configuring machinery to meet production requirements.

This includes planning and setting up machine configurations, checking setting conform to specification, checking settings achieve production rates, checking conformity of processed products and providing all relevant information prior to the start of production.

This standard is for those who set up machine configurations to meet production requirements.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. follow work instructions and specifications at all times
  2. set up machinery to meet production requirements in accordance with approved procedures
  3. assess set-up time so that it fits into production schedules and downtime is kept to a minimum
  4. plan the effective use of resources and prioritise workloads so that deadlines are met
  5. plan machinery configuration so that wastage is kept to a minimum and work instructions and specifications are met
  6. obtain all relevant data and resources to prove machinery
  7. deal with any cleaning or maintenance requirements encountered during set up in line with agreed procedures
  8. check that initial machine settings conform to production specifications
  9. conduct trials to ensure that machine configuration is safe and meets specification
  10. check that new settings achieve required production rates
  11. check processed products against specifications to ensure conformity
  12. make adjustments to configurations when necessary to ensure conformity
  13. ensure that authority to proceed with production is given when final production settings are determined
  14. complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with agreed procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to receive, interpret and follow work instructions, making use of the information supplied
  2. the manufacturing processes and production cycle
  3. the machine capabilities, operating characteristics, limits and criticalities of machine settings
  4. commonly occurring faults and their diagnosis
  5. the factors influencing the handling characteristics of materials during production
  6. the sources of technical data on materials, equipment, machinery and processes
  7. the compatibility of machine and materials
  8. the format and content of production specification
  9. the implications of incorrect use of machinery operations within the production process
  10. product construction, composition and manufacture
  11. the importance of achieving quality and its relation to end users or customers
  12. how to resolve problems within the work area, and within limits of personal responsibility
  13. how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility
  14. the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures 
  15. the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
  16. the organisation's quality standards
  17. own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
  18. the types of records kept, how they are completed and the importance of accuracy
  19. the importance of complying with instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions
  20. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
