Overview
This standard is about carrying out routine testing operations on textile products.
This includes preparing samples, carrying out tests, recording and validating results, drawing conclusions and making recommendations based on test results.
This standard is for those who perform textile testing operations.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- select and prepare testing equipment for specified tests
- check that equipment is fit for purpose, calibrated and ready for use
- report faulty, unserviceable equipment to appropriate people
- identify correct samples to be tested
- prepare samples for testing in accordance with standard operating procedures
- ensure appropriate controlled conditions are in place before testing begins
- carry out prescribed tests according to standard procedures and within agreed timescales
- apply approved tolerances when required
- ensure test variables are within acceptable limits
- make adjustments to maintain required conditions during testing
- record and report deviations from set procedures to appropriate people
- identify and store test samples in accordance with agreed procedures
- check data against required outcomes
- record, validate and present results in line with agreed procedures
- draw valid and reliable conclusions from processed data
- identify and resolve deviations following agreed procedures
- make recommendations based on validated test results
- complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with agreed procedures
- clean the work area and dispose of used samples, waste, equipment and materials in accordance with organisational safety and operating procedures

- how to receive, interpret and follow work instructions, making use of the information supplied
- how to plan work activities to maintain continuity of operations
- how to rectify problems within the work area, and within limits of personal responsibility
- the principles of testing
- the types of testing methods and routines and the methods for controlling variables
- the types of testing equipment and ways of ensuring its serviceability
- the action to take when equipment is defective
- the types of hazards, risks and abnormal occurrences when testing and how to respond to them
- the types of waste and their disposal methods
- the statistical and mathematical techniques applicable to data and calculation of test results
- the methods for processing and validating data including tolerance limits and required levels of accuracy
- how to deal with deviations and anomalies and the procedures for correcting data
- the procedures for recording and retrieving data and who to report test results to
- the importance of achieving quality and its relation to the end user or customer
- how to resolve problems within the work area, and within limits of personal responsibility
- how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility
- the importance of effective communication with colleagues, the lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures
- the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
- own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
- the types of records kept, how they are completed and stored and the importance of accuracy
- the importance of complying with written instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions
