Overview

This standard is about carrying out textile operations by hand while maintaining work pattern and work flow

This includes handling materials and components, checking for, and reporting any irregularities or faults with materials, equipment or tools.

This standard is for those who perform manual operations within the textiles industry.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. follow work instructions and specifications at all times
  2. carry out handover at handover points in line with handover procedures
  3. check and confirm equipment, materials and tools against specifications and report any irregularities or faults in line with agreed procedures
  4. select and use working methods and techniques
  5. handle and protect materials and products from contamination or damage in line with agreed procedures
  6. monitor the supply of materials and components to meet production requirements
  7. co-ordinate own work activities with that of others to maintain the work flow 
  8. work in ways that minimise wastage at all times
  9. minimise work interruptions and downtime to maintain productivity levels
  10. check own work meets quality and quantity requirements
  11. achieve continuity of production within agreed timescales
  12. identify problems with processing and take action in line with agreed procedures
  13. complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with agreed procedures
  14. forward processed goods using agreed procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to receive and interpret work instructions and make use of the information supplied
  2. the characteristics of materials to be processed
  3. how the supply of materials and components is maintained
  4. the capabilities of the equipment to be used
  5. the types of faults and irregularities in materials, equipment and components and appropriate action to take
  6. how to deal with problems in processing, and the corrective action to take
  7. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  8. the methods for protecting materials and finished goods from contamination or damage
  9. the importance of maintaining product quality and the organisation's quality standards
  10. the production procedures, sequences and time schedules and the dependencies between own role and that of others
  11. the importance of maintaining continuity of production
  12. the transfer or forwarding procedures and safe handling of materials and goods
  13. the importance of achieving quality and its relation to the end user or customer
  14. how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility
  15. how to resolve problems within the work area
  16. the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures 
  17. the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
  18. own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
  19. the types of records kept, how they are completed and the importance of accuracy
  20. the importance of complying with instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and the manufacturers' instructions
  21. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
