Overview

This standard is about producing textile products.  This can apply to any type of textile manufacture regardless of which machinery, equipment or construction methods are used.

This includes assembling components to specification, maintaining and controlling the work pattern, maximising production and maintaining quality requirements.

This standard is for those who produce textile products.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. follow work instructions and specifications at all times
  2. carry out handover at handover points in line with handover procedures
  3. check materials and components against specification
  4. identify faulty components or components that do not match specifications and take action in line with agreed procedures
  5. maintain a clean, safe work area at all times
  6. ensure equipment meets specifications and is ready for use
  7. organise work area to optimise production flow
  8. use approved methods of assembly to assemble components
  9. identify assembly problems and take prompt action in line with agreed procedures
  10. monitor the supply of materials and components to meet production requirements
  11. manage own work pattern to ensure maximum operating efficiency
  12. make adjustments to work pattern to maintain the required flow of production
  13. work in ways that minimise wastage at all times
  14. minimise work interruptions and downtime to maintain productivity levels
  15. protect outputs from damage and contamination in line with agreed procedures
  16. handle materials and components in line with safety and handling procedures
  17. forward manufactured goods using agreed procedures
  18. complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with agreed procedures
  19. carry out daily maintenance of machinery and equipment in line with agreed procedures

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to receive, interpret and follow work instructions, making use of the information supplied
  2. hand over procedures and information required at changeover points
  3. how to plan and prepare work activities to maintain continuity of operations
  4. the characteristics of materials and components to be assembled
  5. the capabilities of machinery and equipment to be used and action to be taken when it does not conform to specification
  6. the implications of incorrect use of machinery operations within the production process
  7. the importance of keeping the work area clean and free from obstructions 
  8. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  9. the types of faults and irregularities in material and components and the appropriate action to take
  10. the types of problems in manufacturing and appropriate action to take
  11. the methods for protecting materials and manufactured goods
  12. importance of maintaining product quality
  13. how the supply of materials and components is maintained and the action to take when dealing with shortfalls or quality problems
  14. the types of adjustment to work patterns that can be made
  15. the organisation's forwarding procedures
  16. the importance of achieving quality and its relation to the end user or customer
  17. how to resolve problems within the work area
  18. how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility
  19. the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures
  20. the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
  21. own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
  22. the types of records kept, how they are completed and the importance of accuracy
  23. the importance of complying with instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions
  24. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
