Overview
This standard is about organising and controlling the textile manufacturing process to meet required productivity levels and quality standards.
This includes monitoring machinery, equipment and materials against specification, maintaining the flow of materials and production, adjusting work patterns to meet production targets and checking processed products against quality specification.
This standard is for those who oversee the manufacture of textile products and are responsible for the efficiency of the production.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- pass on essential information and instructions at handover points in line with handover procedures
- keep work area clean and safe and free from waste and obstructions during production
- check that materials, machinery and equipment meet specification
- monitor materials and equipment against specifications during processing
- take prompt action within your own area of responsibility, if materials or equipment fail to match specification
- organise and carry out tasks to maintain the flow of materials and production
- use work methods to meet specifications within agreed time schedules
- meet and maintain productivity levels
- adjust the work pattern as required to maintain production targets
- minimise work interruptions and downtime to maintain production timelines
- work in ways that minimise wastage at all times
- meet and maintain the quality of output to meet specification
- check that processed products meet production specifications
- forward processed products using agreed procedures
- complete and store accurate records and documentation in line with agreed procedures
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- how to receive, interpret and follow work instructions, making use of the information supplied
- how to plan and prepare work activities to maintain continuity of operations
- the faults with materials, equipment and processes, their causes and relevant action
- the characteristics of materials to be processed and how to handle them
- the capabilities of equipment to be used and actions to be taken when it does not conform to specification
- the importance of maintaining a clean and safe work area
- the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
- the actions to take when dealing with shortfalls and quality problems in supplies and production
- the limits of own responsibility during the distribution process
- the methods for protecting materials
- the importance of achieving quality and its relation to the end user or customer
- how to resolve problems within the work area
- how your specific work activities relate to the whole process and limits of own responsibility
- the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures
- the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene
- own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
- the types of records kept, how they are completed and the importance of accuracy
- the importance of complying with instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions
