Overview

This standard is about manufacturing textiles to meet quality and quantity requirements. This can apply to the manufacture of textiles or products made from textiles.

This includes preparing for processing, manufacturing products to specification, following approved work methods, processing materials safely and keeping the work area clean and safe. This includes being able to organise the work to ensure it flows effectively through the work area and carry out on-going routine maintenance of tools and equipment.

This standard is for those who are responsible for the daily upkeep of machinery and equipment and carrying out the production process for textile products.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. prepare and organise work area to meet production requirements
  2. check that materials supplied for processing meet specification
  3. lift and handle materials, machinery, equipment and tools in line with lifting and handling procedures
  4. carry out pre-use tests on equipment in line with organisational procedures
  5. identify and use approved working methods for manufacturing processes
  6. process materials according to work instructions
  7. work in ways that minimise waste at all times
  8. produce specified quality and quantity of products
  9. receive, use and provide relevant information at appropriate times during production cycles
  10. identify and deal with problems with materials, equipment and machinery in line with organisational procedures
  11. report any problems in production that you cannot resolve to appropriate people
  12. forward manufactured products according to instructions
  13. maintain tools and equipment in line within agreed schedules
  14. report the need for maintenance, cleaning risks or hazards for areas outside your responsibility to appropriate people
  15. dispose of waste in designated locations in line with organisational procedures
  16. carry out cleaning according to schedules and limits of responsibility
  17. minimise work interruptions and downtime to maintain production timelines
  18. complete accurate records and documentation and store them in designated locations

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to receive and follow work instructions and specifications, and make use of the information supplied
  2. how to check and clarify work instructions and specifications
  3. how own work role fits in with the overall manufacturing process and the limits of your responsibility
  4. the importance of keeping the work area and equipment clean and free from waste
  5. the types of cleaning equipment and materials used and routine cleaning procedures and their importance
  6. the effects a dirty or untidy work area can have on the product and production timeline
  7. the effect contamination can have on products including: machine oil, dirt, blood, cosmetics, allergens, and the classification of vegan and non-vegan materials
  8. how to carry out cleaning and maintenance, the safe practices to follow and the hazards likely to be encountered
  9. how the supply of materials is maintained and how they are checked against specifications
  10. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  11. the types of problems which occur with materials and equipment and the action to take
  12. how to present ideas for improvement to line manager
  13. the type of information exchanged during the production cycle, especially at start up and change over
  14. how to resolve problems within the work area, and within limits of personal responsibility
  15. the importance of effective communication with colleagues, lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures
  16. own organisation's rules, codes and guidelines, including timekeeping and personal hygiene
  17. own organisation's quality standards
  18. own organisation's ethical and sustainability policies
  19. the types of records kept, how they are completed and the importance of accuracy
  20. the importance of complying with instructions, equipment operating procedures, safe working practices and manufacturers' instructions
  21. statutory responsibilities under health, safety and environmental legislation and regulations
