Overview

This standard is about carrying out tests and trials on leather samples and analysing the results. This is an important stage prior to production.

This includes planning tests and trials, selecting trial samples, carrying out tests and trials, analysing results on leather samples and trials and making clear recommendations to the relevant people for future development plans.

This standard is for those who analyse and test leather samples.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. check plans for tests and trials meet the organisation's objectives and customer requirements
  2. check planned tests and trials can be maintained within budget, time constraints and the organisation's capabilities
  3. select appropriate trial samples for testing and analysis
  4. design and carry out tests on trial samples in accordance with industry standards
  5. carry out an accurate analysis of the results of tests and trials
  6. identify and discuss pertinent points of the results of tests and trials with relevant people
  7. evaluate the success of tests and trials within the context of the organisation's objectives and customer requirements
  8. make clear and realistic recommendations for future development with agreed outcomes and indicative costs to relevant people
  9. discuss new techniques and processes with relevant people at appropriate times
  10. use the results of testing and analysis to update plans for future development
  11. comply with written instructions relating to testing and analysis
  12. complete required forms, records and other documentation
  13. work to legal requirements, standards and regulations, policies, procedures and professional codes at all times

You need to know and understand:

  1. the common types and nature of raw materials used in the production of leather in the organisation
  2. the organisation's leather production methods and techniques
  3. the organisation's objectives relating to analysis and testing of leather samples
  4. the benefits and disadvantages of different types of tests and trials
  5. how to select trial samples
  6. how to accurately analyse results
  7. budgets and timescales for development work
  8. relevant sources of information for keeping up-to-date with new techniques and processes
  9. the organisation's rules, codes, guidelines and standards
  10. the organisation's policies about ethical production and sustainability
  11. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  12. statutory responsibilities under health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations
  13. common hazards in the work area and workplace procedures for dealing with them
  14. the hazards associated with the machines and the safety precautions that must be taken
  15. relevant people including those managing production
  16. how to discuss new techniques and processes in a way that encourages useful contributions and ideas
