Overview
This standard is about developing patterns and lasts, sourcing materials and organising the production of footwear samples.
This includes interpreting designs, designing new or adapting existing patterns, sourcing materials, buying new or adapting existing lasts, identifying factories to meet quality requirements, producing and costing samples and liaising with factories and suppliers about sample production and checking that customer requirements are met.
This standard is for technicians who are
responsible for developing patterns and lasts, sourcing materials and organising
the production of footwear samples.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- make sure the work area is free from hazards at all times
- interpret footwear designs in line with specifications
- design new or adapt existing footwear patterns to meet initial footwear designs
- source appropriate materials for production
- adapt existing footwear lasts when possible
- procure new lasts when it is not possible to adapt existing lasts
- source factories with capability to manufacture products to required quality
- create and engineer patterns to meet requirements
- create footwear samples at appropriate times
- work in ways that minimise waste at all **times
- produce realistic costings for footwear samples
- liaise with external partners on sample production at appropriate times
- make sure footwear samples meet customer expectations for quality and deadlines
- comply with written instructions relating to product development
- complete required forms, records and other documentation
- work to legal requirements, standards and regulations, policies, procedures and professional codes at all times
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- foot anatomy
- principles of last designing
- principles of last grading
- footwear sizing systems
- last construction
- material types and characteristics including leather, synthetic and textile
- footwear construction methods
- foot comfort requirements
- footwear manufacturing processes
- the organisation's policies about ethical production and sustainability
- the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
- legal and labelling requirements regarding manufacturing materials & chemicals
- statutory responsibilities under health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations
- the organisation's rules, codes, guidelines and standards
- equipment operating procedures
- manufacturers' instructions
- product safety directives
- the organisation's ethical trading and social accountability policies
- the use of banned and restricted substances
- common hazards in the work area and workplace procedures for dealing with them
- who to liaise with, and when and how to communicate with them including factories and suppliers
