Overview

This standard is about using computer-aided manufacturing systems to create patterns for footwear and leathergoods.  This covers producing digitised patterns for factory testing, user trials and production.

This includes confirming pattern requirements, digitising designs into standard shape and size, amending patterns, operating computer-aided manufacturing systems and issuing technical specifications.  

This standard is for those who create digitised patterns using computer-aided manufacturing systems.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. make sure the work area is free from hazards at all times
  2. liaise with relevant people to confirm pattern requirements
  3. digitise agreed designs into standard shape and size
  4. digitise patterns to ensure optimum shape and sizing
  5. make technical specifications available to relevant people involved in factory production trials
  6. confirm changes and amendments to patterns once trials have been inspected
  7. make adjustments to patterns to compensate for problems identified during trials
  8. make sure patterns are recreated in sections that comply with agreed designs
  9. include stitch markers and other information required to take patterns forward for production
  10. prepare relevant technical specifications for agreed designs
  11. shut down CAM systems after use in accordance with organisational instructions
  12. comply with written instructions relating to pattern creation
  13. complete required forms, records and other documentation
  14. work to legal requirements, standards and regulations, policies, procedures and professional codes at all times

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. relevant information about pattern requirements including when patterns are required, design specifications, types of materials
  2. when information about footwear is relevant to your work including last style, quantity and size ratio and alterations in the form of the foot during maturity
  3. the principles of pattern cutting and grading
  4. the importance of pattern trials
  5. the principles and main pattern creation capabilities of CAM systems
  6. the benefits of pattern standardisation as applied to CAM systems
  7. how to digitise patterns and ensure optimum shape and sizing
  8. the main information required to use digitising equipment
  9. how to start, operate and close down CAM systems
  10. the organisation's policies about ethical production and sustainability
  11. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  12. the importance of recording information clearly about alterations and amendments
  13. the information required by those making factory production trials and subsequent production
  14. the organisation's rules, codes, guidelines and standards
  15. equipment operating procedures
  16. statutory responsibilities under health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations
  17. common hazards in the work area and workplace procedures for dealing with them
  18. manufacturers' instructions for the operation of CAM systems
  19. who to liaise with, and when and how to communicate with them
