Overview
This standard is about using computer-aided manufacturing systems to create patterns for footwear and leathergoods. This covers producing digitised patterns for factory testing, user trials and production.

Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- make sure the work area is free from hazards at all times
- liaise with relevant people to confirm pattern requirements
- digitise agreed designs into standard shape and size
- digitise patterns to ensure optimum shape and sizing
- make technical specifications available to relevant people involved in factory production trials
- confirm changes and amendments to patterns once trials have been inspected
- make adjustments to patterns to compensate for problems identified during trials
- make sure patterns are recreated in sections that comply with agreed designs
- include stitch markers and other information required to take patterns forward for production
- prepare relevant technical specifications for agreed designs
- shut down CAM systems after use in accordance with organisational instructions
- comply with written instructions relating to pattern creation
- complete required forms, records and other documentation
- work to legal requirements, standards and regulations, policies, procedures and professional codes at all times

- when information about footwear is relevant to your work including last style, quantity and size ratio and alterations in the form of the foot during maturity

- the benefits of pattern standardisation as applied to CAM systems
- how to digitise patterns and ensure optimum shape and sizing
- the main information required to use digitising equipment
- how to start, operate and close down CAM systems
- the organisation's policies about ethical production and sustainability
- the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
- the importance of recording information clearly about alterations and amendments
- the information required by those making factory production trials and subsequent production
- the organisation's rules, codes, guidelines and standards
- equipment operating procedures
- statutory responsibilities under health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations
- common hazards in the work area and workplace procedures for dealing with them
- manufacturers' instructions for the operation of CAM systems
- who to liaise with, and when and how to communicate with them
