Overview

This standard is about creating complex patterns for production of footwear and leathergoods.  This covers producing complex patterns for factory testing, user trials and production.

This includes confirming pattern requirements, adhering inside and outside forms or patterns, creating mean forms, standards and sectional pieces, amending patterns, grading patterns, labelling and storing patterns and issuing them.

This standard is for anyone who creates patterns for factory testing, user trials and production of complex footwear or leathergoods.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. make sure work area is free from hazards at all times
  2. liaise with appropriate colleagues to confirm pattern requirements
  3. adhere form material to create required inside and outside forms or patterns
  4. create required mean forms and standard and sectional pieces
  5. choose appropriate equipment to produce patterns
  6. produce and cut pattern specifications that meet pattern requirements
  7. liaise with relevant people about most effective construction methods
  8. issue patterns for prototype manufacture at appropriate times
  9. inspect prototypes and agree any amendments to be made to patterns with relevant people
  10. produce pattern trials for factory testing at appropriate times
  11. make adjustments to patterns to compensate for any problems identified during trials
  12. grade patterns with required restrictions or groupings
  13. label and store pattern pieces in line with the organisation's requirements
  14. include stitch markers and other information required to take patterns forward for production
  15. keep workstations and equipment clean during pattern work
  16. comply with written instructions relating to creating patterns
  17. complete required forms, records and other documentation
  18. work to legal requirements, standards and regulations, policies, procedures and professional codes at all times

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. sources of information about the scope of the job and the tasks required
  2. relevant information about pattern requirements including when patterns are required, design specifications, types of materials
  3. information about footwear relevant to your work including last style, quantity and size ratio and alterations in the form of the foot during maturity
  4. methods used to create patterns including mean forms, standard and sectional pieces
  5. pattern making tools, their limitations and how to use them safely
  6. manufacturer and supplier instructions relating to tools, equipment and materials for pattern making
  7. basic rules of pattern cutting and grading
  8. benefits of pattern standardisation
  9. methods used to adhere forms or pattern material and appropriate tools and equipment
  10. implications of the work for production and an appreciation of costs
  11. the production of jigs and markers
  12. the organisation's policies about ethical production and sustainability
  13. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  14. how work, sequence and processes are carried out in each department
  15. the main capabilities of production machinery in use in the organisation
  16. the main types of construction for footwear or leathergoods
  17. the main capabilities, restrictions and characteristics of materials and adhesives
  18. the use of relevant seam constructions
  19. the importance of economy of pattern in terms of material usage and knives
  20. how to work safely and ensure a safe and clean work area
  21. the importance of pattern and fitting trials
  22. the organisation's rules, codes, guidelines and standards
  23. equipment operating procedures
  24. statutory responsibilities under health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations
  25. common hazards in the work area and workplace procedures for dealing with them
