Overview

This standard is about trialling footwear products to determine fitness for purpose by conducting wearer trials.

This includes estimating numbers of each product to trial, organising fitting panels of people with appropriate foot types, taking measurements and fitting shoes to wearers, analysing returned footwear, interpreting results, producing reports, making recommendations for change and sharing results with sample makers.

This standard is for technicians who conduct wearer trials on participants.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. make sure work area is free from hazards at all times
  2. estimate appropriate numbers of products required to conduct effective trials and check specifications
  3. organise fitting panels in line with trial specifications
  4. agree criteria for different foot types with appropriate people
  5. take relevant foot measurements
  6. fit footwear onto wearers in accordance with fitting standards and techniques
  7. assess and analyse returned footwear against trial specifications
  8. produce reports which make recommendations for change based on footwear trials
  9. feedback trial results to relevant people involved with sample making
  10. comply with written instructions relating to footwear trials
  11. complete required forms, records and other documentation
  12. work to legal requirements, standards and regulations, policies, procedures and professional codes at all times

  1. specifications for wearer trials including selection of fitting panels and criteria for different foot types
  2. how to measure foot comfort when footwear is being worn
  3. foot anatomical pressure points when wearing footwear
  4. foot measurement and methods of assessing fit
  5. key safety related properties
  6. key quality related properties
  7. the organisation's approach and policies on ethical trading and social accountability
  8. the organisation's policies about ethical production and sustainability
  9. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  10. client and organisational returns systems
  11. fit reports and how to complete them
  12. children's fitting criteria including required growth area
  13. the organisation's rules, codes, guidelines and standards
  14. equipment operating procedures
  15. products safety directives
  16. the use of banned and restricted substances
  17. footwear labelling directives
  18. common hazards in the work area and workplace procedures for dealing with them
  19. statutory responsibilities under health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations
  20. who to liaise with, and when and how to communicate with them
