Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. make sure the work area is free from hazards at all times
  2. identify the position and extent of required repairs
  3. agree repair activities, timescales and expected costs with appropriate people
  4. prepare machines, tools and adhesives that are appropriate for repairs
  5. remove worn or damaged parts that are being repaired or replaced
  6. check the availability of sufficient quantities of materials and components to complete repairs
  7. make sure that materials and components used are free of faults and compatible with article's materials and components
  8. use repair materials and components in a way that minimises wastage
  9. carry out repairs to the expected quality
  10. make sure repairs are completed within agreed timescales
  11. polish or buff repaired articles when required
  12. comply with written instructions relating to repairs
  13. complete required forms, records and other documentation
  14. work to legal requirements, standards and regulations, policies, procedures and professional codes at all times

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the features and characteristics of worn and damaged footwear or leathergoods
  2. construction methods and compatible materials and components for articles being repaired 
  3. repair options available and the correct combinations of materials and components
  4. factors influencing repair options and their costs
  5. how to communicate with appropriate people about repair options, timescales and costs including customers and managers
  6. availability of materials and components
  7. types of solvents and adhesives, their compatibilty with materials and how to prepare and use them
  8. common problems encountered when repairing with adhesives and methods to prevent and correct these problems
  9. tools and machinery required for repairs and how to set up, use them and close them down
  10. types, sizes and uses of components and how to attach them
  11. types, sizes and uses of fasteners and how to correctly and neatly secure them
  12. when and how to trim excess material
  13. the organisation's policies about ethical production and sustainability
  14. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  15. how to mix and prepare colours and prepare articles to receive colouring
  16. techniques used to obtain different surfaces and finishes
  17. the different types of polishing and buffing materials and equipment
  18. the organisation's rules, codes, guidelines and standards
  19. safety precautions relating to the storage, handling and use of solvents, adhesives and colours
  20. safety precautions relating to the use of tools and equipment including those for edge cutting, trimming, polishing, attaching metal fastenings and using abrasives
  21. statutory responsibilities under health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations
  22. common hazards in the work area and workplace procedures for dealing with them
  23. manufacturers' instructions relating to the use of machinery, tools and adhesives
