Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. make sure the work area is free from hazards at all times
  2. obtain details of orders from appropriate sources
  3. identify appropriate products from order information
  4. check selected products meet specification and agree with order details
  5. remove and report rejected items to appropriate people
  6. choose packaging materials to meet customers' requirements
  7. select appropriate support materials to accompany products
  8. use packaging materials that will protect products whilst minimising dispatch costs
  9. produce clear and complete labels
  10. dispatch goods to customers in accordance with the organisation's requirements and customer instructions
  11. check that specified transportation arrangements are used to meet agreed delivery schedules
  12. check all details and pass documentation to relevant people for invoicing
  13. comply with written instructions relating to packaging and dispatch
  14. complete required forms, records and other documentation
  15. work to legal requirements, standards and regulations, policies, procedures and professional codes at all times

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. how to interpret customers' orders
  2. quality standards and how to maintain them
  3. who rejected items should be referred to
  4. factors determining the type of transportation used
  5. necessary documentation when goods are exported
  6. the organisation's rules, codes, guidelines and standards
  7. statutory responsibilities under health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations
  8. the organisation's policies about ethical production and sustainability
  9. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  10. common hazards in the work area and workplace procedures for dealing with them
  11. required support materials
  12. appropriate packaging materials for products being dispatched
  13. labelling requirements
  14. transportation methods appropriate for different destinations including local, national and international
  15. delivery schedules
  16. required paperwork and who to pass invoice information to
