Overview
This standard is about organising, cleaning and maintaining your own work areas and activities to make sure that instructions are followed and agreed manufacturing products are produced.
This includes organising own work area, keeping work area clean, checking guards are in place, minimising and disposing of waste, maintaining tools and equipment, minimising interruptions and completing documentation.
This standard is for anyone involved in manufacturing.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- prepare and organise own work area before starting work
- lift and handle materials, machinery, equipment and tools in line with the organisation's procedures
- check appropriate machine guards are in place
- work in ways that minimise waste at all times
- maintain a clean and hazard free working area at all times
- maintain tools and equipment in line within agreed schedules
- report the need for any maintenance or cleaning of areas outside your responsibility to appropriate people
- report unsafe equipment, risks and hazards to appropriate people
- set and maintain specified positions for working
- use cleaning equipment and methods appropriate for the work to be carried out
- dispose of waste in designated locations and in line with health and safety requirements
- carry out cleaning according to schedules and limits of responsibility
- minimise work interruptions to maintain production timelines at all times
- complete records and documentation with accurate information and store them in line with organisational processes
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- how to receive and follow work instructions and specifications and make use of the information supplied
- how own work role fits in with the overall manufacturing process and the limits of your responsibility
- the importance of minimised production costs
- how to take action when problems are identified
- different ways of minimising waste
- the importance of maintenance and regular cleaning
- the effects a dirty or untidy work area can have on product and production timelines
- the effect contamination can have on products and classifications of vegan materials including machine oil, dirt, blood, cosmetics, allergens
- the organisation's rules, codes and guidelines including timekeeping and personal hygiene requirements
- common faults with equipment and how they can be rectified
- types of cleaning equipment and substances and their use
- how to carry out cleaning and maintenance, the safe practices to follow and the hazards likely to be encountered
- safe working practices and organisational procedures
- how to resolve problems within own work area
- the importance of effective communication with colleagues
- the lines of communication, authority and reporting procedures
- the organisation's policies about ethical production and sustainability
- the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
- the organisations' quality standards
- types of records kept, including quality, how are they completed and the importance of accuracy
- how to comply with instructions, including equipment operating procedures and/ manufacturer's instructions
- statutory responsibilities under Health and Safety and Environmental legislation and regulations
