Overview

This standard is about assisting with different areas of operation to ease production flow in footwear and leathergoods manufacturing.  

This includes identifying bottlenecks in production flow, moving to other operations to assist production flow when required, carrying out quality checks on materials and components from previous operations and own completed work before passing to the next stage of production. 

This standard is for anyone who works in different areas of operation in footwear and leathergoods operation to ease production flow.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. make sure the work area is free from hazards at all times
  2. identify aspects of production flow that are holding up other operations
  3. assist with areas of operation that are holding up other operations
  4. assist with areas of operation that are within own job capabilities and responsibility
  5. work in line with requirements on work tickets at all times
  6. select and use appropriate tools, equipment, materials and components for each area of operation
  7. make sure tools, equipment, materials and components are fit for purpose
  8. check the quality of work from previous operations is within acceptable tolerances and complies with quality requirements
  9. carry out work to an acceptable level and quality for each area of operation
  10. work in ways that minimise waste at all times
  11. complete work to appropriate quality standards
  12. sort work in appropriate order for following production stages
  13. place completed work in locations that minimise risk of damage
  14. bring any additional problems you identify to the attention of relevant people
  15. leave the work area clean, safe and secure upon completion of work
  16. facilitate the requirements of the relevant department in manufacturing area
  17. comply with written instructions relating to production workflow
  18. complete required forms, records and other documentation
  19. work to legal requirements, standards and regulations, policies, procedures and professional codes at all times

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. styles of footwear and leathergood products currently being produced
  2. production schedules and targets associated with each operation within the department(s)
  3. the production sequence and the timing of key operations
  4. how to identify when the workflow is holding up other operations
  5. what you need to know before deciding to help out
  6. own job role and scope and which complex operations are within own capabilities and training
  7. aspects of work tickets appropriate to operations
  8. tools, equipment, materials and components for each operation
  9. how to make suitable adjustments to maintain quality standards 
  10. how to check the work area is clean and free from hazards
  11. how to check tools, equipment, materials and components are fit for purpose
  12. the importance of monitoring the quality of incoming work
  13. what to look for in checking the acceptability of quality
  14. tolerances required for preceding and current operations
  15. how to carry out operations in footwear and leathergoods production including preparing components, skiving and splitting materials, machine forming and embellishing, machine sewing and processing orders
  16. the level of workflow required for every operation within scope
  17. the organisation's policies about ethical production and sustainability
  18. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  19. reasons for placing work carefully for the next process
  20. who to inform about what to do to solve the problems and the key facts relevant people need to know when problems are identified
  21. requirements for leaving work areas clean and safe
  22. the organisation's rules, codes, guidelines and standards
  23. equipment operating procedures
  24. statutory responsibilities under health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations
  25. common hazards in the work area and workplace procedures for dealing with them
