Overview

This standard is for those who carry out operations in any area of footwear or leathergoods’ manufacture including for modular or bespoke footwear.  Operations can be in one area or multiple areas.

This includes checking equipment is set up, checking materials and components for faults and colour-matching, checking quality of work received,  carrying out operations at required rate and quality, identifying and correcting faults in own work and sorting and placing work for following operations.

This standard is for anyone who carries out operations in footwear or leathergoods’ manufacture.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. make sure the work area is free from hazards at all times
  2. work in line with instructions on work tickets and any special instructions at all times
  3. use appropriate tools, equipment, materials and components for operations on which you are working
  4. check that equipment is safe and set up in readiness for use
  5. select the correct component parts for the style being worked on
  6. check the quality of work received from previous operations complies with quality requirements within accepted tolerances
  7. check that materials and components to be used are available and free from faults
  8. ensure that materials and components comply with specification for colour matching
  9. carry out operations at a rate which maintains work flow and meets production targets
  10. work in ways that minimise waste at all times
  11. complete work to the quality standard required
  12. identify and correct work that does not conform to the organisation's quality standards without delay
  13. report any faults in materials, components, damaged work or defective tools and machines to responsible people
  14. sort and place work to assist the next stage of production and minimise risk of damage
  15. leave work area safe and secure when work is complete
  16. comply with written instructions relating to production
  17. complete required forms, records and other documentation
  18. work to legal requirements, standards and regulations, policies, procedures and professional codes at all times

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. styles of products currently being produced
  2. appearance of the final product
  3. what the common faults are
  4. production sequences and targets associated with the operation on which you are working
  5. aspects of work tickets appropriate to operations
  6. how to handle materials and components and avoid making them unusable
  7. how to apply fittings, produce modular lasts and order required uppers when working in orthopaedics
  8. colour matching within a product and between a pair of products
  9. the organisation's policies about ethical production and sustainability
  10. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  11. the reasons for placing work carefully for the next process
  12. the implications of not completing work correctly on final production and the product
  13. quality requirements and accepted tolerances for the operation in which you are involved
  14. which tools, equipment and settings are needed for the operation and how to adjust them
  15. equipment operating procedures and manufacturers' instructions relating to set up, use and closedown
  16. common faults in tools and equipment and implications of working with faulty equipment
  17. how to handle tools and equipment safely and the health and safety implications of not doing so
  18. the organisation's rules, codes, guidelines and standards
  19. statutory responsibilities under health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations
  20. common hazards in the work area and workplace procedures for dealing with them
  21. how to make the work area safe and secure
