Overview
This standard is about inspecting the quality of finished footwear or leathergoods products prior to their packaging and dispatch. It includes taking corrective action where products are below standard.
This includes carrying out visual inspections, identifying sub-standard aspects, carrying out minor repairs, isolating, marketing and reporting faults that you cannot resolve and passing approved products to the next stage of production.
This standard is for those who inspect finished footwear or leathergoods.
Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- make sure the work area is free from hazards at all times
- carry out visual inspections of finished products against product specifications
- inspect all required aspects of products
- identify the type and nature of faults where products are below quality standards
- carry out minor repair operations where faults are recoverable
- isolate and mark the location of non-recoverable faults
- work in ways that minimise waste at all times
- inform appropriate people about faults identified and action taken
- pass approved products to the next stage of production
- comply with written instructions relating to product inspection
- complete required forms, records and other documentation
- work to legal requirements, standards and regulations, policies, procedures and professional codes at all times
Knowledge and Understanding
You need to know and understand:
- styles of footwear or leathergoods being produced
- the production schedule
- where to find and how to identify the final specification and quality standard requirements expected by customers
- the importance of final specifications and how to access this information and identify any changes made
- the organisation's policies about ethical production and sustainability
- the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
- required quality standards including quality of workmanship, overall finished appearance and cleanliness of end product
- common defects associated with different specifications and materials
- the importance of reporting faults that you cannot resolve promptly
- the organisation's rules, codes, guidelines and standards
- the organisation's procedures for dealing with rejected and substandard footwear
- equipment operating procedures
- statutory responsibilities under health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations
- common hazards in the work area and workplace procedures for dealing with them
- manufacturers' instructions
