This standard is about machine sewing components to produce leathergoods in order to meet agreed production schedules and quality standards.

Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. make sure work area is free from hazards at all times
  2. set up machines according to manufacturers' instructions and production requirements
  3. use machines, tools and equipment appropriate for production requirements
  4. set machine controls to appropriate settings for materials being sewn
  5. perform test runs to ensure machines are operating as required, adjusting controls when necessary
  6. report any defective machines, tools or equipment to responsible person
  7. operate machines in accordance with safety guidelines
  8. optimise positioning and layout of materials to ensure smooth and rapid throughput
  9. sew correct materials in the right sequence to meet production specifications
  10. check that sewn items meet production specifications before passing them to the next stage in the manufacturing process
  11. work in ways that minimise waste at all times
  12. follow the organisation's processes when sewn items do  not meet production specifications
  13. dispose of waste materials in line with the organisation's processes
  14. clean and make safe machines after use
  15. carry out basic maintenance of own machines in line with manufacturers' instructions
  16. comply with written instructions related to machine sewing
  17. complete required forms, records and other documentation
  18. work to legal requirements, standards and regulations, policies, procedures and professional codes at all times

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. the use of machines, tools and equipment for the materials being worked with
  2. how to set up machines for different production requirements
  3. how to set and adjust machine controls
  4. the consequences of incorrectly set machine controls
  5. typical faults of industrial sewing machines
  6. which types of sewing faults are correctable and which are not
  7. the organisation's policies about ethical production and sustainability
  8. the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
  9. the actions to take in the event of machines ceasing to function correctly
  10. the organisation's processes for dealing with substandard work
  11. the organisation's rules, codes, guidelines and standards
  12. statutory responsibilities under health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations
  13. common hazards in the work area and workplace procedures for dealing with them
  14. regulations and guidelines for storage and disposal of waste materials

  15. relevant health and safety regulations and procedures

  16. hazards associated with machines and safety precautions that must be taken
  17. the limits of your own personal responsibility and appropriate persons to whom problems should be referred
