Performance criteria
You must be able to:
- make sure work area is free from hazards at all times
- set up machines according to manufacturers' instructions and production requirements
- use machines, tools and equipment appropriate for production requirements
- set machine controls to appropriate settings for materials being sewn
- perform test runs to ensure machines are operating as required, adjusting controls when necessary
- report any defective machines, tools or equipment to responsible person
- operate machines in accordance with safety guidelines
- optimise positioning and layout of materials to ensure smooth and rapid throughput
- sew correct materials in the right sequence to meet production specifications
- check that sewn items meet production specifications before passing them to the next stage in the manufacturing process
- work in ways that minimise waste at all times
- follow the organisation's processes when sewn items do not meet production specifications
- dispose of waste materials in line with the organisation's processes
- clean and make safe machines after use
- carry out basic maintenance of own machines in line with manufacturers' instructions
- comply with written instructions related to machine sewing
- complete required forms, records and other documentation
- work to legal requirements, standards and regulations, policies, procedures and professional codes at all times

- the use of machines, tools and equipment for the materials being worked with
- how to set up machines for different production requirements
- how to set and adjust machine controls
- the consequences of incorrectly set machine controls
- typical faults of industrial sewing machines
- which types of sewing faults are correctable and which are not

- the effects of wastage on operations and sustainability
- the actions to take in the event of machines ceasing to function correctly
- the organisation's processes for dealing with substandard work
- the organisation's rules, codes, guidelines and standards
- statutory responsibilities under health and safety and environmental legislation and regulations
- common hazards in the work area and workplace procedures for dealing with them
regulations and guidelines for storage and disposal of waste materials
