Overview

This standard is about carrying out lasting, making and associated operations to produce uppers for footwear and leathergoods manufacture.  This can also apply to the manufacture of orthopaedic and bespoke footwear.

This includes selecting machinery and equipment, setting and adjusting machinery and equipment, checking the quality of components, positioning components, carrying out operations in sequence and passing completed work onto the next stage.

This standard is for those who produce uppers by
carrying out lasting, making and other associated operations within footwear or
leathergoods manufacture or modular or bespoke footwear.


Performance criteria

You must be able to:

  1. make sure the work area is free from hazards at all times
  2. select and use appropriate machinery and equipment for each operation
  3. make sure machinery and any associated equipment is set up for lasts being worked on
  4. make adjustments to tools, equipment, settings and materials which maintain safety and quality standards
  5. check that components meet quality standards before working with them
  6. position and lay out components to maximise production whilst maintaining quality
  7. carry out operations in line with production processes
  8. carry out all operations in the correct sequence for the style being worked on
  9. report any faults with machinery and equipment without delay
  10. work in ways that minimise waste at all times
  11. complete work to appropriate quality standards
  12. sort work in appropriate order for following production stages
  13. place completed work in locations that minimise risk of damage
  14. close down the machines in line with safety requirements when work is complete
  15. comply with written instructions related to upper making and closing
  16. complete required forms, records and other documentation
  17. work to legal requirements, standards and regulations, policies, procedures and professional codes at all times

Knowledge and Understanding

You need to know and understand:

  1. processes for producing uppers by using lasting, making and associated operations
  2. relevant aspects of prescriptions and work tickets
  3. specific requirements for working with orthopaedics including the basic anatomy of the foot and common foot conditions **
  4. how to set up, adjust, and position machines and equipment for the last shape being worked on
  5. how to make sure that footwear and leathergoods are processed as required
  6. implications for production of lasting and making
  7. appearance of final products when not processed correctly
  8. common hazards in the work area and procedures for rectifying them
  9. common faults in components and how to rectify them
  10. common characteristics of material being used in lasting and making operations
  11. possible causes of incorrect lasting and how to rectify them
  12. the sequence in which lasting and making fit with other operations
